Is that a 'cuda on the far left? I noticed you said you were bringing home lots of meat. I lived in south Florida for 15 years and we would never eat the large reef predators to keep from getting the reef disease Ciguatera. Never heard of anyone eating a 'cuda in the first place.

Awesome video anyway. We used to spear fish in the Keys after limiting on lobsters in the evening. Some good times no doubt. Sure makes me miss living on the big water. Thanks for sharing.

No we don't eat cuda. I use him to bait crab and crawfish traps

But we do eat the other "reef predators" if that includes amberjack, snapper, and grouper

Yepper we ate them as well but stayed away from the gags or jewfish as well as monster amberjacks.

Thanks for the response. Hope you all find I am not a doucher hog fan. I joined TD cause of the OB. Spend more time here than anywhere else online. Always great info and entertainment to be found. I especially love stories about pow pows. I miss the hell out of mine.

We eat the shite out of Gags!

I wish we could shoot Jewfish
We always see monsters but of course they're illegal

Most 100lb+ amberjack are shot during rodeos but we'll eat them too

I haven't personally. I've had a few look at my fish curiously but thats it. Once I had an AJ wrap himself on the rig and he was just beating himself up. I shot him in the gills so he was bleeding like crazy. This 5' shark kept getting curious and getting closer but i'd just swim down to the fish and the shark would back away.

My buddy shot a small lemon fish one day and had a shark pass and take it off his shaft. That is extremely rare though.

I've made probably 50 rig dives and never saw one shark.

Now, diving off the Florida panhandle, I've seen a few up close. One time I was the only shooter on a rec dive and had a bloody AJ on me when a black tip came on the scene. I saw about 12 different dive masks turn my way and I could sense there was an "a-hole" uttered into many regs. (I don't usually shoot on a "rec" dive and only wanted one good fish to eat that night, fwiw).

Yeah I've found you really have to go looking for sharks if you want to see them sometimes

I want to dive when we go to Perdido Key in May but I'm not going w/o my gun and I'm sure the leisure divers wont like it. So I might just save my money

ETA: or you could do like Rok and Stan used to when it was legal and shoot massive arse sand tigers!

I just check with the person from the shop when arranging the dive and the divemaster, etc., to make sure it's okay. Usually they let me in the water first and out first to cut down on any "unpleasant" scenes. I've done it several times without any problems. Also, I assure the shop/divemaster/etc., that I'm not going on a meat run, only looking for a fish or two, just to cut down on the bullshite.

ETA:

WTF? Monster sharks

WTF? old pics of Rok?

Don't think so, meaning probably not. I think Pensacola is the furtherest west in that area, but probably not far from there.

Those pics brings back memories of yesteryear when Louis would fly down the 3' wide service alleys in the neighborhood on his dirt bike. Crazy sob. (and i mean that in a good way)
