Reading the regs. It says this for boats:

"Boating
State regulations apply. Boats may not
be left overnight on the Refuge. We allow
non-motorized boats, electric motors,
and outboard motors not greater than 10
HP to be operated in all Refuge lakes,
streams, and bayous with the exception
of Indian Lake and the Tensas River.
Outboard motors greater than 10 HP may
be used in Indian Lake and the Tensas
River according to state regulations.
All
motorized boats must utilize navigation
lights according to State regulations."

I have an 11' jon boat with 8hp long tail. Does this mean I can't take it on the Tensas River? I'll be up there for the lottery hunt at the end of Nov. I'm trying to decide whether I want to use an ATV (and pay for the permit) or the boat.

Suggestions/advice would also be nice

From the way that reads, you can take your boat everywhere

I think that means you can take your boat everywhere. It's just a max hp restriction on the other water bodies.

I got the ATV permit.

did we draw the same weekend?

We can possibly combine resources

I drew nov. I think we did. My buddies I'm going with have ATV permits.

BTW, can you send me that map you made of it? If you tried to email it a little while back I didn't get it.

You're Ok to operate on the river. We run a 35 HP all day long in that bitch. Get the ATV permit anyway--gives you options if the river is low but you'd be ok with the gator tail (watch for stumps).

ETA: and read up on this post Tensas hates cajuns

I'd trust the Cajuns more than the guys I know from Tensas

God, these frickers killing everything they see is why I don't see deer worth a frick in maurepas swamp

ETA will I at least not get shot, Motorboat? That's my main concern.

It's hunting brah. If you scout and do the work and the conditions are favorable, you may get a shot. That said, I've hunted up there a decent amount for the past three years and I've had limited opportunities to kill. I passed on several does and missed a big bodied six point with my bow at 40 yds.

We have put our work in and have done our scouting. I am confident we will slay this year.

My buddies are going up the wed before and bowhunting a couple days to scout some. I'm just heading up the night before and going in blind. My strategy is just to try to pick the hardest/most PITA place to get to and hope the other jackasses rustle the deers jimmies and there's not many people around me.

I'm not giving up my plan, but I doubt it will interfere with yours.

On a lottery hunt in Tensas?!?! Same strategy everyone else has. Best to climb a tree next to the road and wait for all the deeps woods guys to push them out to you.

I did one of these at Bayou Cocodrie. Kept getting whistled at(afternoon). Walked past 5 guys. Realized then I was screwed.

Yea I don't have any experience with lottery hunts. I only hunt maurepas swamp WMA public land and I kind of hate it. I'm starting to think this trip is going to be more of a pain than it's worth.

If I had no future prospects of hunting anything but public land I think I'd give up deer hunting completely and pick up winter fishing. shite just sucks. I need a lease again.

yeah, just got back from a trip to Davis Island. Saw more deer in a weekend than I see in several years of hunting BCNWR and Lac Ophelia. Public land can be hard. Too much pressure and no qualms for people to shoot anything.

I got drawn some years ago for the Tensas lottery. Wandered in, no scouting, saw a fawn, left. On way out saw a guy carrying a fawn he had harvested in one hand. Sad. Tensas is too far for me in Alexandria, so I keep it to Bayou Cocodrie NWR, where I can drive in early and go back home.

Between this thread and the first one that was made about it I kinda regret entering. I could've just swamp hunted at home and hung out with the family. The one brother that was coming with me can't make it now so he's not using his permit.

I've seen people from home kill some decent deer out there most years so I didn't think the hunting was that rough.

there are some great deer there, but the lottery hunts are a complete cluster. Tensas is huge, but there will be more people there than any other time of the year, going in early, late, leaving early, walking around in the woods lost, etc. Always better to go with a group. Maybe hook up with Motorboat, if you can lower your standards to hang out with a PI lawyer.

I'm going with a couple close friends and their dad, he booked us a hotel somewhere already. I've been bogged down so I haven't had much time to look at planning or anything yet. Worse case I'll just drink some beer and catch up with friends, ain't nothing wrong with that.

I think I'm just gonna do the ATV permit. I don't have a trailer for the boat, just strap to truck bed (motor off) and don't want to have to deal with it getting stolen in a hotel parking lot by some possum-fricking piece of shite meth-headed thief.
