Kids were playing by the amite and he kept coming up out the water. Didn't risk it and took him out. Didn't see him until today when water went down.

Good shoot but I’m going to say Diamond back water snake.

I’ve never felt bad about killing a water snake of a kind growing up in the marsh and rice fields.

Nope. We used to go snake golfing and it was the best thing ever. We had this drainage ditch and it had all kinds of water snakes and cotton mouths in it. We would carry a golf club when the water got low and follow trails trying to find snapping turtles. We would pull the snapping turtles out and sell them. We would flip the snakes up the bank until we got on level ground and try and take their heads off after they coiled up It’s amazing we never got bit.

I think I caught my first copperhead barehanded at 9 years old and grew up with many pet snakes I caught over the years.

Yet still took pleasure in bashing harmless snakes’ heads with a golf club.

Sounds...stable.

Your love of snakes is disturbing. If I have to make a call between wondering if it’s poisonous or not I am erring on the side of extreme caution.

Your fear of snakes and lack of knowledge is disturbing. Venomous species are very easy to identify. You don’t need to “love” snakes to know that flipping random snakes onto the bank and bashing their heads in is disturbing human behavior.

There is a disturbing lack of snakes in my bayou. I fear everyone along the property kills every one they see.

Well, let me allay your fears here and now, no snake is poisonous.

I sent a picture of a mud snake to my neighbor across the way to tell him if he saw him my daughter released him in the canal so she could try to catch it again. I know the snake stands no chance.

You are almost correct. Asian Tiger Snakes are poisonous and venomous. I know everyone refers to snakes in the vernacular as venomous instead of poisonous, right? And you probably refer to the end of daylight as the earth rotating so that the sun can no longer be seen rather than referring to it as sunset. Welcome literal school, I guess.

That’s a terrible analogy. That’s providing the definition of a word whenever the word will do.

Not incorrectly using a similar word.

Definition from Oxford Languages:

quote:

poisonous - (of an animal) producing poison as a means of attacking enemies or prey; venomous. adjective: poisonous "a poisonous snake“

Likewise...

quote:

Lack of exclusiveness is evident in, 'all venoms are poisons, but not all poisons are venoms' (Halstead, 1965)
