Looking at single stack back-up piece that conceals easily, especially if I'm in situations where I can't IWB my PPQ. The Sig caught my eye, along with Kimber Micro and Colt Mustang. A friend is a big fan of Bersa from a value standpoint. Not a huge Glock guy, but would like some expert opinions on the various options out there.

Have you looked at the P938?

traded my 238 and got a 938. Basically the same size with cheaper and more powerful ammo

Got me a P938 about 6 months ago. Nice little gun that is easy to shoot. Conceals well and I like the safety on the rear of the gun. Also comes with night sights.

Too be honest I wanted something other than a 9mm since I already have that in my Walther. Wanted some variety.

.45 will probably be my next purchase, although I did like the look of my buddy's 357 magnum.

well don't go .380 man. It's just not practical considering what you already have. If you only had a .45, you could make an argument for .380 since those are sort of opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to carry guns.

I'm not going to sit here and call the 238 a shite gun, it isn't. And with +P ammunition you are approaching 9mm ballistics...but .380 ammunition is too damn high and shooting the 938 you can barely tell a difference as far as size and recoil, I just don't see where that gun has a niche anymore. When I bought my 238 the 938 didn't exist yet. My mom carries a 238 and she loves it, but she like my 938 better

Unfortunately they can be kind of pricey. I got lucky and someone started a thread here when the 938 went on sale on PSA. I scored one for like $499 that happened to be the exact model I wanted. Traded my 238 to oleyeller for a shotgun because the 238 just had no purpose for me anymore, there wasn't a situation where it would be the most practical gun for me to have on me

If you can try it out first at the shooting range do it. P238 has no recoil. P938 has pretty good recoil. My wife shot it a couple of times and put it down because it was to snappy.

Just for clarification I think Glock makes a fine gun, I've shot plenty. I've always been somewhat of a contrarian I guess. They just lack personality to me. Now if somebody wants to give me one I'll take it in a heartbeat!

WMTF,
I may be reading you wrong, but to me it sounds like you're looking for a gun for pocket carry. I resort to pocket carry only when I can't carry a bigger gun chambered in at least 9mm. There are some 9mm's that can be carried in SOME pockets, but the right 380 pocket gun will fit better in pockets that a small 9mm won't fit in. I can pocket carry a Kel-Tec 3-AT in all my pockets; OTOH, my Kahr CM9 won't fit in some of my pockets.

The Sig 238 (and the clones you referenced) is a fine gun, but I prefer other 380's for pocket carry. I don't like the extra potential "snag points" of the 238 (beavertail grip safety, frame safety lever and external hammer; I agree w/ most that a 1911 type gun like the 238 should be carried cocked and locked, but this makes the hammer a nice "snag point.") I want my pocket 380 to have a snag-free frame, no external hammer, no external safety lever and a longer, DAO trigger pull.

If I were buying a pocket 380 these days, I'd look closely at the Kahn CW380. Although I don't have this gun, I've been pleased w/ the two Kahr's I do have.

Yeah, wasn't really wanting a pocket gun per se, just a real slim profile that shows little to no print.
But I did a little YouTube research and watched a video where it was being drawn from a pocket holster. I can see where there could be some snag potential.
The night sites are a nice bonus.
Thanks for all the great comments.

Are you sold on the M1911 fire control system? If not, try a P239 - that's a classic Sig, in compact, single stack form. It is all metal, but the nicest little gun (not tiny, little) on the market, IMHO.

If you want to go tiny, I would recommend the tiny pistols by Kahr. Fantastic.

I got messed up on the Walther models thinking the PPQ was a single stack, but looks like it's actually a single stack. That being the case, there are a number of single stack 9's that would be to cc than the PPQ IWB (some can also be carried in some pockets, as well). The ones that first come to mind include: Kahr CM/CW9, Walther PPS, Shield, XDs, Ruger LC9, Kimber Solo, Glock Model 43 and the aforementioned Sig 938 and clones.

I have the P238, and it is a well-built handgun. It is a perfect size for LTC, and I take it with me everywhere. My Glock 19 is a more significant handgun, as the 380 obviously doesn't have the power of a 9mm, but it is nice gun for concealed carry. I highly recommend the 7 round clip with the grip extension, as without it, it is just a bit too small to grip and control.

Yeah my PPQ is a double stack. Carry it when I can but warm weather kinda makes it hard to be discreet.

Google "Kimber micro problems" and "Colt Mustang problems" and then you can eliminate those two from your search. The P238 is great because it is so tiny it can pretty easily fit into a front pocket. Make sure you are comfortable w/ the single action and thumb safety though. If I were you, i would trade in the PPQ for a Glock 43 or Walther PPS M2. Those are single stacks 9's that will carry IWB pretty easily although not in front pocket like the P238.

Yeah, the PPQ is a keeper though. Favorite pistol. I would add another single stack 9mm to the collection. I'm trying to be diverse as I know there are many good manufacturers and I enjoy comparing the "personalities" of the pieces.

If you like the PPQ, I would check out the PPS M2.
