I’m about to pull the trigger on a new Polaris ranger 1k. Probably going to buy from Abernathy. They are $3502. Less than my local dealer.

Side by side recommendation
I am in the market for a side by side, and I’m having trouble narrowing it down. My options are Yamaha Viking, Polaris 900, Polaris 1000, and a Kawasaki Mule. It will be used mainly to scour hunting land, some occasional towing and hauling, but nothing to rigorous. Judging from the previous threads I’ve seen on here, Honda shouldn’t be considered. So I left them out. Any options I’m missing? Also, 4 seater would be preferred, but it’s not a must. What would you do? TIA

I have been in the market for a few years now and every time I am going to pull the trigger I hear of something new coming out that peaks my interest. I have been a Yamaha/Honda guy for the last 20 years so I waited for the new 1000 pioneer to come out and after some not so good reviews I passed. I was dead set on a Can-Am defender but am now leaning towards the Polaris XP 1000. I have never been a Polaris fan because they never seem to have the reliability of the Yamaha and Honda’s of the early 2000’s.

I have searched all over Texas and LA the last week and the best I have found is $14700 out the door with no roof or half windshield on a 3 seater with camo or painted.

Any specific reason you are going with the 1k over the 900?

This is very similar to my situation. I’m a big Honda fan, even to the point where I’ve tried to wait to see if the Pioneer reviews would get better! But it’s now gone from a want, to a necessity. I can’t wait any longer for Honda to get their act together!

I’m going Polaris because I feel like there are more dealers to work on them than can-am. The Mule is a solid choice but I wanted something a little sportier in case I get back into riding a little more.

Check out Sunrise motorsports in Searcy, AR. When I bought my ranger this time last year, they were cheaper than Abernathy's by a couple hundred. The big plus is that they are a good bit closer (to me). Searcy is just outside Little Rock.

I have 2 old Polaris Rangers a 2003 and a 2007. I have had zero problems with either. The 2003 has a straight bar rear suspension and will rattle your teeth but it keeps going.

I also have a 4 seat 2017 Kawasaki Mule camp with power steering and it rides like a Cadillac. Wanted the diesel but my wife bought it and didn’t want to spend the difference.

You can’t go wrong with the Polaris or Mule imo.

Mule or Viking.

The Viking is a great bike, just a little under powered. But it doesn't break. And 50hp isn't bad at all.

The muke comes with a 3yr warranty and the pro fxt is a great unit.

I was just in the same boat. After lots of research, went with the Honda Pioneer 1000 EPS. Extremely happy with it.

I went with the Can Am defender. I’ve had it a year and it’s a beast. The storage and flip up seats are really handy. I didn’t find the Polaris had much storage. The main reason I got the Can Am was due to towing capacity which was 2K lbs. I think Polaris has since increased this to 2K now. I’d look at the defender before you buy. I found I got more for my money.

It's not a bad unit if you drive it right.

The clutch does not suffer fools though

What caused you to say this I thought you hated those units because they were always broken, had recalls, and were bursting into flames.

Contrary to what my random stalker on here likes to say, I don't hate Honda. The 1000 isn't a bad unit.

I have one.

It just isn't a very good unit.

The transmission is a weak point. And it has had its share of recalls. And yes, if it gets a little too hot and runs on one cylinder for a little while, it will burst into flames.

75% of owners will never have an issue besides the clutch. The rest are like me... Annoyed at how close Honda got to a great bike.

Is it better than my Polaris... Nah, it's tied for reliability and lacks the power and comfort of the general.

Is it better than my yamaha? God no. The 1000 has been as close to perfect as I expect of any machine.

My next full size purchase will be a mule.
