Looking to buy a new truck and reading some of these horror stories on forums has me wondering if I should risk it. Is there a legitimate risk?

It's a diesel. If you don't need it and don't need future expensive problems then don't buy it. They are awesome trucks with awesome capabilities but nothing is cheap and it will break regardless of which one you get. I will have another one after this 150 but I also had a 6.0......

My pops has one. Doesn't have a whole lot of miles on it (maybe 35k), but no problems so far. It's a nice truck.

Bulletproof a 6.0, get a new turbo minus the silencer ring, new exhaust, and do the grill swap.

What problems are you hearing about? Everythign I'm aware of is the 6.7 has been a great motor and holding up well in light of the abortions of the 6.4 & 6.0. Although I had 2 6.0's and never had a problem with them. put 100k on one and 60k on the other before I downgraded. I also pulled a trailer nearly every single day.

I have a 14 with 44k miles and haven't had any problems
the used ones are so high I'd definitely recommend new with the rebates
I see trucks identical to mine selling used for the same as I paid new

I googled and found powerstroke.com
So the 2012 and newer don't have the same issues as the 2011(exhaust sensor failure causing motor to blow etc..)? I'm not knowledgeable at all when it comes to auto's so forgive me. Just looking for info from people that do know what they are talking about.
reading all the threads on that webiste will put the fear in you!!

Id get a new one. Buying used in that range won't save you much and they had some issues with fuel pump failures and turbo issues.

I have a 2012 with 34k miles and it has only been in the shop once for a major issue covered under warranty. i had a sensor go out that caused the truck to go into limp mode then ultimately shut off. Had to get it towed to the dealership where they replaced the sensor and also had to replace the radiator for whatever reason. My check engine light is back on for the last few months just haven't gotten around to bringing it in for service. It does ride and tow like a dream though.

a branch new king ranch superduty is in the high 60's to 70. I see lots of 2012-2013's much lower than that.
Edit: I must be looking in the wrong place??

negative, i have a 12 and have had all my sensors replaced. Causes engine to die (restarts after an hour) but it doesn't cause harm to motor. Other than that, its been smooth sailing. 51k currently

true but new prices keep rising each year as well.

You'll probably be able to get $15k in rebates on that. I have no idea why manufacturers have marked up their trucks so much, only to offer incentives year-round. I'd be more inclined to look at a truck that was listed at $30k than one listed at $40k with a $10k rebate I didn't know about before hand. If I only have $30k, I'm not wasting my time looking at something "out if my price range"

The only common-ish issue I've heard about has been the plastic charge tube off the intercooler busting randomly. Happened to mine as I was merging on i10 in front of Courtesy Ford. Had to get it towed there, they had them in stock and swapped out within the hour at no cost. The tech told me they replace a few per week. Several aftermarket companies make a stainless replacement to get rid of the plastic piece.

the run 12k off rebates all the time then the dealership should knock off another 2-3k

If that's the case then you're right i should go look new.

a truck with about 40k or so needs a new set of tires... that's $1200-$1600 in the hole
