Should I buy a new 12 gauge?

Before you answer with "of course", hear me out. I have a 12 gauge pump for home protection and my 12 gauge O/U I use for hunting. I've never duck hunted per se, but I have plans to do some this year. Is the extra shot necessary/worth it? In your opinion, should I take and try with my O/U and then decide or is it just standard to go with the single barrel from the start?

Not if you can shoot.
If spending the moohlah isn't a problem, a semi-auto shotty is a very nice addition to any arsenal, especially for water-fowling.
ETA: I've had my Versamax for the last 2 seasons, but before that, I killed just as many as my semi-auto buddies shooting an 870.

Deadliest shot I know in a duck blind shoots a old Winchester side by side double barrel.

Also duck hunting is pretty rough on firearms. You're in a high moisture environment, usually banging your gun around in a duck blind. If you don't care how your O/U looks after the season go ahead and use it. You can always pick up a used semi auto on LA Sportsman on the cheap.

I'd shoot an O/U exclusively if waterfowl loads didn't molest my shoulder

Duck hunting is often dirty, the o/u will probably get beat up...

How much you willing to spend?
You can get a benelli nova for around $350-400 or a supernova for around $400-450.
Awesome guns that can take a beating.

Yes! You don't need to rationalize anything.

honestly, I find the third shot to be pretty much a wast of shells when duck hunting....if you are still shooting after two, you are typically shooting at the backside of ducks that are out of range by that time...

What about finishing Cripples?
I would buy a new gun because who doesn't want a new gun? And my guns tend to get nasty while duck hunting, not sure it's something I would want to put an o/u through.

I've got a Beretta a391 Extrema II for sale. All black w/ kickoff. Its around 6 years old has approximately 5000 rds through it\. Has some minor scratches on the barrel(normal hunting wear and tear. Otherwise is in excellent shape. I'll sell it to you if you are interested.

I have a few 12 gauges. I always duck hunt with my o/u because it is so sweet compared to any 12 gauge I own.
