This shite right here fa sho no doubt has to be the ULTIMATE home defense shotgun that the average man can own. It's a fricking all stainless and nickle plated 870. How reliable do you fricking want????

Benelli or bust. But I'm a brand whore.
Realistically, you can't go wrong with any of the 3 B's. Beretta, Browning, or Benelli

I am totally missing the point here. You have the opportunity to buy a new shotgun, no limits, and tell the wife it is for her for home defense. Why not get your dream hunting weapon? She'll never know the difference. I'd get one of the new A5s. You get some crap home defense gun and it sits in the closet for 20 years never getting used other than the first time you take her to the range. Doesn't make sense to me.
Then there's the 75% chance that it gets used on you when wifey learns about your girlfriend.

I'd just get a mossberg 500 and spend the rest on hookers and blow

If money is no object, great! But, if money ends up being an issue, one of the youth model 20 gauge shotguns would be a good option. Remington makes one, as does Mossberg. I have two of the Mossbergs. Nothing fancy about them, but they're solid, inexpensive shotguns that will do the job. From my experience, a youth model shotgun is MUCH easier for most women to handle than is a full size shotgun. 20 gauge is more than sufficient for home defense.

Good points.
Money not really an issue.
I haven't shot a shotgun since hunter safety class in junior high. I hope it sits in a closet forever and I never have to pull it out except to shoot for fun.

I gotcha. At present, I have 4 shotguns(2 12s, 2 20s, auto and pump for each), and would love more, and hunt with them frequently, thus my perspective on the matter. I have zero use for a weapon that is not useable for hunting. Given your needs, one of those home defense guns would be perfect.

Good friend of mine has one, but I haven't shot it. I want a coach gun for home defense, along with the 9mm.

I have a Mossberg 930 SPX that I absolutely love. It has a short barrel (18.5"), shoots everything I feed it (even low-brass bird shot), and is relatively soft shooting for a 12 gauge. It's also about $1,000 cheaper than the M4 (got mine for around $525). I like to think of it as the poor man's M4.
