If you didn't own any guns and were going to buy one average priced shotgun, pistol and rifle. What are you getting?
I'm assuming you're not searching for hunting gear, and just want something decent and affordable for range fun and home defense (in an emergency).

If you just want one of each, you likely will keep it a lifetime, and it may become something you will pass down to a child.

Shotgun- go with a Remington 870 with a 24-26 inch barrel and wooden stocks, in 12 gauge.

Rifle- seriously, try to find a nice SKS at or around $300.

Pistol- I'd go with a CZ 75 in 9mm, steel frame.

This combo gives you all-steel weapons capable of firing excellent defensive loads (the CZ and 870), a fun and reliable set of range toys that won't break the bank with ammo (the CZ and SKS), and could certainly be used for hunting if the desire arises (870 and SKS).

I say "steel" since I have no concerns shooting a 60+ yr old steel pistol; but I wouldn't want my grandkid one day trying to shoot a 60+ year old Glock. Polymers can become brittle over the years. Plus, the craftsmanship just isn't the same. Polymer guns are tools, metal guns become heirlooms.
