Have any of y’all ever done a self drilling shallow well at your camp. I’ve seen some videos and seems pretty simple. Just curious if it’s worth it or not.

I haven't done it myself, but I had a buddy drill one in his backyard for watering his garden. I made him a fishtail bit
out of pipe and he did it all by hand. Worked for his garden but you couldn't drink it.

I still cant figure out why you would want to dig a well if you had access to a water hose?

Did several back in the day with my Dad and the neighbors who all had gardens. Actually "dug" the wells by jetting with a 4 inch pump, choked down to 3/4 inch pipe. You weld a 3/4 collar to the bottom of a screen, then attach joints of pipe through the ID of the screen. Lower the screen while pumping, with any sort of a-frame and jet away. Have a short joint of large diameter pipe with a nipple coming out the side for the returns to flow out of the hole into a couple of pits. We tied back to the screen with 3 inch PVC to act as our casing. Once you get to bottom, flush to clean returns, then dump gravel in around the casing to gravel pack the screen. Pull out the 3/4 jet pipe and drop down some PVC down the center to the middle of your screen section (where their should be water) and pump away.

It's free water and you can water your yard as much as want with it and not worry about seeing a huge bill at the end of the month.

It's better to not use chlorinated water for your garden

That's pretty cool. If you don't have access to city water or power on a rural tract, that would be worth bringing in a water tank and gas powered pump to try to do yourself. I wouldn't drink it, but would be good for washing up. We have a primitive camping area at our hunting lease. I might bring this up to the board to try on a work day next year.
