I grew up freshwater fishing using only Mono. I'm converting to Inshore and see where most people prefer Braided with a Fluorocarbon leader. What are the benefits of the braid and do you have to use a leader? When is Mono a better option? I assume I can use my bass tackle for Reds and Specks?

EDIT (read the question arse backwards)

I'll use braid with a leader on reds.

Braid doesn't work well for me with Specks. I stick to mono for that. They have soft mouths much like sac-a-lait.

But do you use a leader on your braid?

No leader, but I only use it with bottom fishing. 40 lb. test. With a good rod, you'll feel every bump. Make sure if you do get stuck, do not grab the line. It will cut your hand like a knife. I like the extra sensitivity, but have tying the stuff. I keep a pair of scissors my boat for braid.

I took my bass tackle to catch some Reds once when I was younger. Wound up with all new tackle.

Braid>mono for everything except top water IMO

I use 20 pound power pro for everything. It works great but because it's so thin it will sometimes get inside the split rings on top water hooks, so I keep one pole with mono for that.

So the braid gets tangled easier in treble hooks?

30lb power pro on everything I have. Fluoro leader for popping corks, topwater, and Carolina rig. No break offs EVER.

Braid floats doesn't stretch and is less likely to break but most visible, and a knot or backlash in braid is about the stupidest and most baffling thing you will ever encounter

Fluorocarbon sinks the fastest, least visible, and doesn't stretch much

Mono stretches, less visable than braid, somewhere in the middle on boyancy

When going deep water for snapper & grouper, braids have landed fish that years ago would never have been landed. Has changed the bottom-fishing game.

Which braid is the best for a baitcaster if you are targeting specks and reds? Seems like a backlash would be impossible to get out.

Powerpro on baitcaster is a PITA. I only use mono on the baitcasters.

I'm more of an freshwater guy, but what pogey said would probably be ideal. I use 40-50lb on frogs cause I like the diameter, and tends to act a little more normal cause it's stiffer, plus I might be pulling a couple pounds of grass in with the fish, but in all honesty that's what the Bassmaster elites use

Suffix 832 is also good stuff, color just tends to fade a little more than powerpro.

Shouldn't you be making high quality product, SK?

As far as the fishin line... just use whatever Cubby uses.

I have used 30lb on my Shimanos for probably the last 5 years and have never had any problems with backlash that I wouldn't have with mono. The only thing is that every now and then the braid will tend to dig into the rest of the spool, but it's not a big deal if I keep an eye on it. I have nothing bad to say about good mono, I just like braid for different reasons, a few of which are the strength and no memory.
