Yea. Dad has a 115 and I have a 200 ho and my uncle has a 225.

IMO they are fantastic. The weight saving isnt as drastic as it should be but they are bad arse.

I do like how the suki is geared down to swing a bigger wheel. Bigger wheels are more efficient

This just isn’t true... I’ve ran 350 Verado’s on my two most recent boats and in 4 years have never had 1 problem with them and in my opinion have wayyyy outperformed the Yamaha F350. There’s a reason all the Mexican Gulf Fishing Company guys and a lot of the other charter captains in Venice are switching to Verado’s right now...

Is there a lot of variation on what people use for boats that size?

Not really, but I think it's more because the people who own bay boats aren't super technical/specific.

Shortage of big Yammys has alot to do with it. Hard to let a brand new Freeman sit there while waiting for Yamaha and not earn money.

Not all the MGFC guys run Mercury. Not all the MGFC guys want to run Mercury. Mercury has come a long way in the last 5 yrs or so concerning saltwater reliability.

We repowered our 23' Bay Bolt last year. We had a 250 HPDI and went back with an F300. I will say we only went with Yamaha because the dealer matched the price Suzuki quoted us for the same setup, a 300 with fly by wire controls. The original Yamaha quote was over $4K more than the Suzuki quote. Don't skimp and not get mechanical controls, you will love the difference they make. Get a quote for both and see if Yamaha will match, if not go with the suzuki.

How you liking the 300 on the bay bolt. my brother has the same boat with a 250F. is there a noticable cruise speed increase?

All I’m saying is the way some of the people on here shite on Mercury is ridiculous. I’ve never had any issues with the motors and will not hesitate to run 100+ miles across the Gulf chasing fish. The new merc’s are as solid as they come and the best motor on the market in my opinion...

Like another poster said, it's because there is a major back order on Yamaha and Mercury will give them the motors for cheap at pro staff price.

They built some ill-will from producing motors that left boaters stranded in some isolated areas.

You could be 100% right. The new mercs are impressive and by all accounts more reliable. I think that there is still some mental stigma earned by the brand name which is hard to get past when you are spending $15k - $20k or more (I have no idea what a new 350 costs) per motor.

They've been great for a long time. Mid-2000s optis may have been the best outboards ever made even though I was really partial to the EFIs.

Bay boat guys are typically more concerned with holeshot and performance with a load than squeezing out an extra half mile an hour. Bigger wheels are better suited to that. They do add substantially more drag when spun up fast, so they arent the best for going fast.

It's a shame mercury abandoned the optimax. Theyre cheap and so good.

Pump the brakes, mercs stay broke down all the time so why would a charter boat hang them if they don’t work and lose $$$$?????
All of the big three (merc, zuk, yam) are reliable but price and access to wrenches are huge factors guys with one or four consider.
All also have their own quirks that you will deal with eventually.

I think we are cruising about 4 miles an hour faster loaded to fish. I have a screenshot of my gauges from a few weeks ago in Venice. We were loaded with 5 people, ice, beer and full fuel tank and all gear. I was running 4K rpm, 30 mph getting 2.2 mpg per the gauge. I get well over 3 mpg with just me and the wife running on the river. I'm turning a 21M prop. And we do have the YES warranty

I prefer superior products. I can't even get rid of a 10 year old Mercury 60 4 stroke for $3,000
