Replacing a boat trailer axle

I am replacing a boat trailer axle hubs and bearings on my fishing boat trailer. My question is would a 3500 lb. axle be better pulling than the 2000 lb. axle?

I'm no expert but I don't think one would pull any better than the other. It's just the weight the axle is rated for. I don't think you would notice any difference until you went from a single axle to for example a tandem axle.

More importantly, what type of hubs will the axle have. I strongly recommend ones that grease from the rear bearing to the front for ease of maintenance. Also i think there is one called victor that is several years maintenance free.

That's what I have on mine and I love them. Ask Mike Gerald about them. He gives them high praise. I was unsure about them when I bought my boat with those type hubs on the trailer. After talking to him for a few minutes about them I came away with a different mindset about them.

DO NOT use that oil system.

Are you referring to the cool hubs? I have the Ranger cool hubs and love them. Altough I have never had a leak and heard if you do it can be hard to find and get it corrected.
Have a friend with this hybrid system that also loves it.

Not any better for pulling. The idea is to have a "beefier" axle and bearings, resulting in slower wear by the lighter boat that could be towed on a 2000 lbs. set up.
I did this exact thing on mine... I think the dipping it in and out of water and not regreasing often enough tears them up more than weight.

Bearings are such a worry to me. It keeps me from taking longer trips, unfortunately. We're planning on going crabbing this week and as much as I'd like to haul my boat to Lake Charles area to put in and go in ship channel or big lake to crab, I'm too worried about the 80+ miles putting the bearing at risk.
I went 50 miles one way to the river this weekend and greased before I left, after I got there, and when I got home.
Everytime I had at least some broken down grease come out.
How much do you have to spin the wheel when greasing? When I grease it I have some coming out of the zerk but after rolling it the spring receedes.

I may grease every 3 years I have never had an issue with grease. Have had documented issues with oil.

Me too. Most people have spare tires, I also keep a spare hub and bearing assembly.

I'd say odds are pretty even when it comes to flat tire vs. bearings as to which problem may arise. In fact, I'd say I've changed more bearings than flats over the years.

Rolling since '92 and have had bearing problems with oil twice. Bearing problems with grease none, and changed 4 flats

Rolling since '97...
2 flats and 3 grease bearing episodes.

your bearings can't handle the extra weight from all the fish I load on there

I'm tired of replacing bearings
