2006 Mercury Mountaineer ~150,000 miles

Drove fine til the transmission died and has working a/c & heat. We let it sit up too long (8 months) & now the battery won't keep a charge. These are the only known issues.
(Edited: it has a check engine light on because the catalytic converter needs replacing. Doesn't affect how it runs, but it can't pass inspection)

Since the used car market has been pretty bad the last couple years, I don't know whether to:
* try to find something else cheap (hah)
* replace transmission & battery and use it for hunting/fishing (extra vehicle) or
* get rid of it

Any suggestions are appreciated!

I'd try to unload it.

A diamond in the rough for a 3rd vehicle are th old chevy avalanches (the ones with all the plastic shite). You can get em in 4wd and they are cheap cause no one wanted them. You can spray the plastic with SEM bumper coater and make em black again.

Solid driveline and has a bed and 4wd if needed.

I'll look at them when the daughter begins driving if we don't find a c10 or mid 90s chevy 1500 to fix up together.

You don’t need a unreliable vehicle out in the woods. Time to cut your losses.

True, good point. To get to the camp is 2 miles of winding, narrow dirt "road" and 1/2 mile over hill and dale. The only time we had to tow a vehicle from back there was a nightmare.

Some of you wouldn’t have survived in the pre duck dynasty over priced sitka camo days.
