Red Tip Centipede

My centipede grass is currently showing signs of red tips. I imagine this is a sign for centipede stress, but what can cause this?

Your centipede is allergic to pollen

Probably drought stress right now

I don't think it's drought stress. I have 100% irrigation coverage. I'm thinking about taking a soil sample and sending off to LSU Ag. I wonder if too much nitrogen may be the cause...?

Original centipede varieties had quite a bit of reddish/purple colored blades in the grass. I have an older variety in my yard and the blade tips often take on a purple color towards the end of winter and early spring. Probably nothing to worry about.

Have you put out any nitrogen yet?

I was working in Dothan, AL a few years ago and needed a map from the Soil Conservation office. I noticed on my way in they had centipede grass that had about as much purple color as it had green. I asked one of the guys inside about it. He said it was an old, old variety and they only had to have it cut 5 or 6 times a year.

Yes, I put down weed n feed (I know dumb thing to do) about a week ago. These centipede is grad A sod and is only three years old. The purplish/red just started this week. I wish I only had the mow 4 to 5 times. I cut every week. Grass is in excellent shape other than the few blades with the color

Weed n Feed shouldn't have enough nitrogen to hurt on one go 'round, but I wouldn't do another anytime soon. More than about 1.5# of nitrogen per year will onset centipede decline

Thanks. I usually put down twice a year. Late March and mid July. Then a winterizer in late October. Lawn looks excellent, just curious what the color tips meant. Will probably aerate and top dress next spring

aerate
Most will never know how beneficial this is

I need to find someone in St Tammany parish who does it

If you have an equipment rental place nearby I'd go that route before hiring someone although if that may actually be cheaper if they can get a few people lined up.

I've heard about the spike shoes, but prefer not to spend all day . Also, not sure how well that works compared to pulling plugs

Better than doing nothing no where near as effective as plug aeration. The idea is to break up the compacted soil so water air and nutrients can absorb better, resulting in a thinner thatch layer. It will also reduce water runoff. There are other options you can buy on a roller which is going to be more efficient than spike sandals.

I think you are being way paranoid about your grass man

A neighbor of mine will rent the machine every other year and we split the cost between three of us.

Some people say I'm paranoid too, but hell....just another hobby as far as I'm concerned.

It's called taking pride in something that is the biggest purchase one will make. It's also called bringing resale value to the home. Like others have stated it is also a hobby of mine.
