I've always wanted to learn the finer points of handling a bow but have never shot one. I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of a decent bow to start with, or hell even where to start. I've got about 50 yards in the backyard to practice in. My aim would be eventually deer or bowfishing.

quote:Archery.com classifieds. I would look for Mathews or Elite from last 5-7 years. Draw length is a big deal though.

cabela's are quite good and they'll fit you in store. picked mine up 3 years ago for about 300 and it still shoots great.

Where are you located that info will help point you to a reputable pro-shop.
What budget are you looking at? Resist the urge to buy used or set it up on your own. Archery and bow tuning is complicated and just starting you should be focusing on form and fundamentals not dealing with a bow not tuned correctly.
The cheapest bow you can buy RTH ready to hunt is going to be better than a top end bow from 20yrs ago.
As for the deer and bow fishing that’s two different things and should be approached differently unless your trying to go the instinctive traditional route.

I'm in NW Fort Worth. So Cabela's is definitely an option. Wasn't sure if it was the best though. $300 would be a decent price point.

I got into bow hunting this year as well. I went with a Bear Legit. I got it from Cabelas and they set it up in house. It is compact and light weight. I have nothing to compare it to, but I find it to be smooth when drawing back and shooting. The full set up (bow, arrows, case…) ran right around $650.

Bear makes good entry-point bows.

My first was a PSE Brute package from Cabelas years ago, sub $500 for everything. I would definitely look at some of their packages in your price range, maybe bump it up a little if you can. Do a little research and I think you would be good to go. Piece other items together as you go and get more into it. Btw, I still have my Brute as my backup bow, shot it last year after replacing strings 3 years before that and it was still dialed in.

go to Cinnamon Creek Archery and ask lots of questions. Jeff can hook you up. At one point during our passion for bow hunting, we were all in your shoes. Go get advice from the source where you can test drive various bows and see what feels best for you.

Anyone ever use a diamond archery edge? Comes ready to hunt for under $500 has adjustable draw weight from 7-70 lbs

I’ve got a Bear Element starter bow I can sell you for $400. It’s 65lb and 28 inch draw. Very accurate

That's not too far from me, I'll have to give them a look, thanks for the heads up!

Haven't used that one, but I have an older Diamond bow that I love. Keep saying I'm going to upgrade and never do.
Hell, I almost offered it up in this thread since it's a lefty, but then I wouldn't have a bow for the rest of the season...

Anyone have any experience with the Mission Switch? Im torn between that and the Bear Species bow as a starter.
