Need a winch for a Suzuki samurai..recommended size and brand? Cabled or rope? Hear the rope has to be covered all the time or it will get brittle if that's the case I'm going with cable

Vehicle weight x 1.5 is your winch lbs, from warn. Warn, Ramsey or bulldog

I went with rope in my jeep and didn't keep it covered but rope can get affected by UV rays. No issues with the smittybilt. Rope has a lot of advantages over the cable such as weight and less stored potential energy when under load. Also won't rust or have metal burrs. Downside is that abrasion is a concern. But if you use a guard/sleeve own the winch along with straps for the anchor point you should be fine.

Old school Warn 8274. Best winch ever made.

I have a warn 9000 and a warn 12000, and neither one come close to my 8274.

Edit: if you don't use it much. Id go with synthetic rope. I use mine a lot and have broken most synthetic brands. Ive never broken a wire cable.

Yessir, got a 8274 on my tacoma, 1 of 1 as far as I know. Warn doesn't market that winch for the gen 2 but it will fit!

8274 is a great winch (I've had one for 20 years) but you don't need one for your Samurai.

How is the vehicle used?
1.5x the weight of the vehicle is a rule of thumb for a minimum size, but I tend to prefer overkill.

Cable vs. Synthetic: If you aren't an off-road enthusiast, I'd go cable.

Synthetic is safer, but steel cable can tolerate more neglect and misuse.

Lol, it is a little heavy for a Sami. Not knocking on a Sami, though. They are cool light trucks.

Get a warn

Now that that's covered, get cable. Rope is way cooler, but it costs more and doesn't take abuse as well as regular steel cable.

I'd think a 9000 would be plenty for a regular ol jeep and that's probably what I'd put on a samurai.

I have an M1200 laying in my old mans shop, but that would be wayyyyyyyy overkill for a samurai. It probably doesn't have enough alternator to run it.
