I looked into it once. My plan was to plumb it under the floor and in some of the interior walls. I was looking at one with a wood furnace that was super efficient. Supposed to use something equivalent to 2 big pieces of firewood per day. I think it's a great idea, but I'm not sure how much of a cost benefit you would get down here where we only get a month or so of cold weather. I'd imagine there could be a definite benefit in a colder climate.

I've been in homes where this is the heating method and it's very nice. I would think that if you're building a house this wouldn't be too big a deal to acheive.

My BIL owns a plumbing company in Western NY and put one in his house. It gets plenty cold there and his house is toasty warm without being dry.

He has two things going for him that I bet you don't that would make it cost prohibitive for you. A gas well that he gets free natural gas from and mad plumbing skills (you should check out his boiler room, it looks like something you would see on a nuclear sub).

He even has it in his driveway and side walks so he never has to plow. Legit.

I'm going to add electricity based heating under the flooring when I renovate the bathroom. Keeping the wife happy trumps all other cost/benefit analysis.

I don't know whether I would use electricity or hot water if I was using radiant heating through out the house.

With all of the slab issues that occur in south Louisiana, I'd stay far away from it. Heating is such a small portion of the energy load here that I'd spend the money elsewhere, too.
