I'm planning on selling a handgun I purchased new a few years ago, are there any special steps I need to take before/when I sell it?
TIA

No, for peace of mind, just write something up stating the date and what you are transfering ownership of and have the new owner sign it

Not in LA. You don't even need a bill of sale, but it's a good idea just to cover your arse.

I just don't see how you don't have to have anything notorized...

How do you even do that?

My main concern is having legal proof that the gun was sold to someone else. Especially if some nut of off here buys it

Create a simple bill of sale, with the date, names and addresses of seller and buyer, and serial number and description of the gun.
Make two copies, and you both sign it. I'd check the person's ID too if you don't know them.
You keep one copy, give him the other.
This is all about CYA.

That helps a lot. I'm not too savvy with all of this legal lingo so I'm going to use your format. Thanks!

Handguns are not currently registered in LA.
A person to person sale does not require the instant background check that is done when one buys a handgun from a dealer. This is the "gun show loophole" anti-gunners frequently complain about.
