I am so proud of this board right now. There's usually a couple guys insisting on a 7 mag.

I am a rabid 270 win fan. Favorite caliber of all time and IMO the best round out there for white tail. It's marginal for elk, but it can be done.

I would look at Browning a-bolt or x-bolt. Both are great rifles. I love the medallions.

Remington 700 bdl Very nice.

Winchester model 70, all fine rifles.

Only thing I don't really like about my Remington 700 ADL 7mag is having to eject each and every shell because it doesn't have a detachable magazine or a hinged drop plate for removing them. But as far as killing things it's money. BUT i bought mine before everyone factory tested and sold these subMOA models when cheap guns were made the same as expensive guns just without shiny finishes.

My 7 mag (now retired) was an ADL.
someone gave me a BDL stock for it, and I glass bedded it and converted it.

Run to Katy and go to Bass Pro.
they have a Model 70 30-06 Featherweight...it's a 22" barrel versus the 24" barrel of the Sporter...and Sporter weighs 4 ounces more. Otherwise, the specs of the Featherweight and Sporter are alike.

so, let's assume I want a .270 or a 30-06, what are the good models to consider?

I know of Winchester, Remington, Weatherby, Browning...I like the classic wood-grain look.

Seems like the choices are endless...how to narrow it down?

It comes down to personal preference. Honestly all of those are great guns. Hold them all for a while and go with the one that feels "better" in your hands. I promise any of those will shoot just fine. When it comes to accuracy, be more concerned about optics. You'd be better off buying a standard priced rifle like the Rem. 700 and investing in a quality scope if you want a fine rifle. Don't buy a $1200 rifle and put a $150 Walmart special scope on there and expect to get the maximum effectiveness out of the rifle. For the same amount of money you could buy an $800 rifle and a decent $400 scope and be much better off.

Get it. You'll be very happy with that.

The win model 70 .30-06 is an american legend.

ETA: Don't worry about the barrel length. Rifles don't get "too long" until they start wearing 26+" barrels

The difference will be minimal, maybe slightly and I mean no one on this earth slightly would be able to tell the difference but the 24" barrel will have a little more muzzle velocity of the projectile.
