When choosing rubber couplings, is there a rule of thumb (autocorrect) to which size couplings correspond with pipe diameter?

ETA: I'm confused on how these different pieces are measure. Ie: inner and outer diameter

English mother fri...

If using PVC you should be cementing it together not using rubber couplings.

What exactly are you trying to do, we can help.

The fittings should be made from the same material as the pipe

Cutting out a large section of iron pipe and replacing with pvc. The rubber couplings with metal bands seemed the way to go. Joining iron to pvc

Yes that will work. You want to find a rubber coupling that has as close to the same ID as the iron pipes OD. Then make sure to get PVC pipe that matches the OD measurement of the iron pipe.

Go ahead and spend the money for a nut driver to tighten the hose clamps instead of trying to use a screwdriver.

This particular section of pipe was in bad shape. The vertical pipe from the sink is fine, the 6 foot vertical pipe leading to the main outdoor drain is the problem. I'm just replacing that 5.5 feet

all pvc is measured by the inner diameter... so if you have a 4" piece of pvc the I.D. is 4" the O.D is 4-1/2" so you would need a rubber coupling with a 4-1/2" I.D.

Use one of these to connect from CI to PVC.

OD of the pipe to match the ID of the Fernco (major manufacturer)coupling.

You may need to get a brass compression fitting to put on the copper pipe, the get a threaded PVC coupling and screw into the compression fitting the go from there by cementing PVC to PVC.
