Anyone been on a trip that can refer me to a guide? I'd like to go to KS based on proximity. Also, what to expect and your thoughts on choice of rifles, shot distance, etc?

I went in Wyoming one year in May. The new pups were just emerging from the holes and moving around. They're dumb as rocks. We hunted this place for free. We just stayed at a local motel and rode out every day to the pastures to shoot dogs. The rancher had benches that we would carry around on a trailer. When we were done we just put the benches back in his barn and went home. I am sure you can do it without having to pay anything.

We shot 22/250s with some handload rounds that my buddy worked up. I don't remember those details.

Judge,
I'm at work now, but I'll share some info tonight. I've been going on pd hunts >20 yrs. In the early yrs, I went on unguided hunts, but last 5 years or so it's been on guided hunts.

As far as equipment, rifles in 204 Hornady, 221 Fireball, 222 Remington, 223 Remington, 222 Remington Magnum are best. 22-250 is also good, but be careful to avoid heating the chamber up too much. Be warned: some guides don't allow AR-15's.

Distances will depend mostly on how much the dogs have been shot. A close shot will be 200 yds, but 300-400 will be more common.

Equipment should include good quality optics w/ binoculars, a spotting scope and at least on range finder for the group.

I'd encourage you to go! It's a blast!

Judge,
Your "closest" options for a pd hunt will be west TX, west OK and west KS. My first pd hunt was in the Dalhart, TX area. In following years I went on pd hunts w/ a rancher northwest of Lubbock, TX. Unfortunately, parenthood called and I had to take a sabbatical from hunting. When I was ready to start back, a prolonged drought had hit west TX so there was no pd hunting anywhere. By the time the drought started to clear some, he'd gotten old and died. Thereafter, I started going on guided hunts. I just didn't feel like I had sufficient to spend it developing contacts.

I've been on guided hunts in nw KS (St. Francis, KS, but the gentleman no longer guides pd hunts), central KS ( 10 Gauge Outfitters), sw KS ( Rebel Ridge Outfitters nw TX ( Sagebrush Hunts) and central OK ( No Mercy Hunting).

10 Gauge had the best hunting, but was the most expensive. No Mercy had only a single dog town that had been heavily shot; I doubt I'll hunt w/ them again. Although I had a 2 day hunt w/ RR, we only got to shoot 1 day (decent shooting) as the 2nd day was a bust due to bad weather. I've got another hunt scheduled w/ RR this summer. Sagebrush was the least expensive, but is largely a DIY hunt. The "guide" lets you borrow a map (that has pd towns marked on it) of the Rita Blanca Grasslands. I've got a second hunt booked w/ him this year, as well. Sagebrush also offers a fully guided hunt that costs more. Texas Prairie Dog Safaris has been at it a long time. Some friends of mine hunted w/ him some years ago. He seemed to emphasize getting the hunters to successfully make very long shots.

If you've got the time and energy and want a full DIY hunt, you can call county agents/game wardens of counties that have pd's.

If you go on a pd hunt, I stroungly suggest you carry a "pop up canopy". I don't know how I ever hunted w/o on in the early days. Having one makes the heat a lot more tolerable. You can also search the 'net for guided pd hunts, but there aren't many left guiding hunts.

If I can be of any further help for you, let me know.

Now for some pics.....

My personal favorite pd gun, a Remington XP-100 in 22 BR.

A very tired pd hunter and my second favorite pd gun, an XP in 6 BR.
