need one for light duty around the yard. Should I spend the money on a Stihl, or go with a cheaper one?

I went with a cheap one from Harbor Freight for $80.00. Also had a 20% off coupon witch made it about $70 after Taxes. It work great I'd trim 4 trees with it.
Here's the LINK.

Stihl if you already have a combi system.

Echo if you don't.

Both are going to cost about the same For standalone units.

The last mechanical thing I bought from HF lasted about 20 seconds. No idea what happened. It went in the trash, and I spent the extra money for a good one after that.

Depends on how much you're going to use it.

1+ if you're going to use it very much.

Cheaper if you're only going to trim limbs on a few trees one time only. Of course, once you've trimmed the limbs, it will prolly be yrs before you need to trim them again.

I really like my Shindawa combi system, but they got bought out by Echo a few yrs ago.

Me too. I have a gas one too and I grab the HF electric one if I'm within range of an electrical outlet.

I agree with this. I've used a bunch, and Stihl wins hands down. If you're gonna be using it often(ish), I'd stick with Stihl or Echo. There's a lot to be said for not having to worry about your shite breaking whenever you need it.

I went with the echo multi attachment from Home Depot and I use the pole saw at the ranch and it works great!

Forgive my ignorance, but is the combo system a pole saw/weed trimmer?

Have the Stihl and it will work you if you're on it all day. It's nice for clearing shooting lanes but it's extremely heavy. Something lighter duty would probably be better for occasional use

I always totally wear myself out when using a pole saw...cut until I am tired out and then realize I have to move all of that shite...

I have used the multi attachment parts with generic on sale trimmer heads for many years now. I usually get 5 years or more out of a trimmer head. None of the attachments have worn out. I have brush cutter, tiller, hedge trimmer, polesaw, blower, and of course straight and curved line trimmers.

The cost for all attachments, and 10 years worth of heads is less than the stilh polesaw. What's more is stilH polesaw is HEAVY in comparison and not as length adjustable.

Eta; never buy electriv or gas powered tools at HF. HF is great for unusual size tools that you will use infrequently.
