My father is an old timer and he hates new style, long, split handle rods (he's still stuck in the early 80's when he made his bones bass fishing) and now he's getting back into it.

Last year, I bought him a Pfleuger Patriarch XT and paired it with a Garcia Villain rod and he's barely used it because as he says "I hate those damn long handle rods."

So, are there any good, short handle and/or pistol grip rods around anymore that aren't under 6 ft? I'm not dropping good money on any rod under 7 ft for that nice of a reel. I ought to buy him a $25 ugly stick and make him happy, but I also won't put that kind of reel on a cheap arse, POS rod.

Anybody got any suggestions?

All seriousness, the zebco bass rods aren't bad and those come in pistol grip.

Give him what he wants. Take him fishing. You'll be glad you did one day.

Watch out for a used All Star IM6. They made several in pistol grip 5'6" back in the day and are great rods. You could also have him one built if that's an option.

I got curious for myself after reading your post and checked eBay. G Loomis makes one, listed for 115. I also saw an all star for sale

That seems pretty ridiculous. Get him what he wants. And why is rod length so important? If I'm flipping, then sure I want a longer rod, but for throwing spinnerbaits, square bills, rattle traps, and most tx rigged plastics, I prefer a 6'6" rod. And if he is like every other old timer I've fished with, he wants to fish sitting down, in which case a shorter rod is much preferred.
