I have a pine tree in my yard that is making clicking noises. Also, I found some larva underneath the bark thst look like pine beetle larva.

Any other option than taking the tree down? It seems to be browning a little.

Also, is treating the other pines with Permethrin sufficient to stop them from infecting other trees?

We had 50/50 success spraying diesel fuel on the trees. After they get under the bark though and it starts slipping the tree is pretty much toast. Is it pine beetles or sawyers? the beetles start in tops and diesel wont work on them. If its sawyers they start law and make clicking noise. The diesel sometimes works on them

Have that tree felled at once and make sure you burn everything. They will spread like wild fire.

I'm in Lafayette and seeing quite a few old pine trees dying. Pointed it out to my wife today.

Do you have a county agent that could come out?

I’d have your other Pines treated immediately. We lost 5-6 100+ year old pine trees in my mother’s yard 3 summers ago. It worked out for the better with the added sunlight but those were trees she didn’t want to cut down. They died one right after the other

I've got a guy coming next week to take the tree out, and I've got some permethrin that I'll be spraying on the rest of the trees every couple of months.

They seem to be isolated to this one tree for now.

I appreciate you guys putting the fear of God in me. Lol

If you haven’t been to Colorado recently; you wouldn’t how big a problem this is. Huge beetle problem over the last few years. Was crazy to see almost entire mountain side of dead pine trees due to these bugs. Cyclical.

Luckily, my redneck arse likes to step outside to pee in the middle of the night, or I wouldn't have known about this tree. Lol

here you live? Pictures/size of the base of the trees? If they are under 25" at base and you are not to far, I will come and haul off the main logs.

Hers died during a terrible drought that killed a lot of plantation pines. I had a forester jokingly tell me he’d have to move because there wouldn’t be any merchantable timber left

I've got a dozen pine trees in my backyard that I would love to cut down. Four of them have to be cut down due to pine leaf beetles, but I'm putting cutting the rest.

Is there someone around Monroe that sprays pine trees to keep them from getting the beetles?

Some questions:

Can you peel some bark off to see the galleries (tunnels) the beetles are making in the cambium (the first white layer under the bark)? If you can, post a pic. Different beetles make different galleries...one way to I.d. them

Are there gobs of resin on the bark that look like chewed gum?

Is there sawdust at the base of the tree?

All these are clues to identify what you've got. I'm a forester with 2 degrees and 40 years experience

Pine beetles start at the top of a pine tree and work down. You first notice the top dead. Only way to get rid of pine beetles is to cut infected tree and a boundary of trees around it.

Ill get some better pictures, bc these don't show their tunnels very well.

I didnt see a beetle, but I did find a few of these feisty arse larva looking things.

The tree is in North central, la.

Why would you want an eaten up pine tree? The tree company will be able to get it out of there.

I would say those are ips beetles also known as engravers doing that to your tree the larva looks like a sawyer beetle larvae they come in after the tree is starting to die that's probably the noise you are hearing as they are eating the tree

You are dead on with your sawyer beetle larva. It sounds and looks identical to these:

Lawyer Beetle Larva Youtube video

Are you saying that one type of beetle took it out, and a different type of larva are now present?

I've got some strong arse permethrin on route. I just want to know if spraying the other pines up about 15 feet will keep these things from killing any more pines?

I've also got suspend sc on the way, but I doubt that will help the beetle issue much.

Ips are the initial attackers and then the secondaries like sawyers come in after tree is dead or dying

The log is still good to saw up and I have a mill. Yep, a bit to far. If anyone near BR is having any pine trees felled, I would be interested in the logs. I can come and get them and load them myself.

I don't have any pine trees on my place. Just hardwood trees.
