About half a mile behind my farm there's an old abandoned grain facility. Lots of old warehouses and all that. It's always been home to about 100-200 pigeons. But I've never been able to lure them to my fields (tried one year with a feeder).

Someone told me that the owls and hawks keep them beat down because they roost in those big open warehouses with no protection from avian predators.

He said that if I put in an area where they can safely nest -- like breeding cages, chicken coops -- and combined that with a feeder, the population would explode.

Anyone have any experience or advice breeding, raising, hunting pigeons??

You're lucky you can't lure them to you, I'd pay to get rid of the ones that have camped out here. Might have to spill blood.

They on your property or just around? There are pigeon traps that work. BigHoss and I have talked about finding a non tourist area and feeding and cast netting them

I want to put the nesting boxes in the old grain facility 1/2 mile from my farm. That's where the shite will be.

I just want the population to boom so I can lure them to the farm for wingshooting.

Can we put a trap out? Trap needs to be off the ground, like on a roof some something similar. Something like this?

Cast net doesn't work so well wick, however a dip net and bread can do wonders

Do you need them alive? Or is dead just as good?

I need live birds, the dogs can tell when a bird is alive or dead and typically won't point a dead bird.

Roof won't work, too much pitch. There are porches but they are about to install rails and spindles along with anti pigeon boxes over the column tops. They would be in the way.
If anyone mentions a pigeon problem I'll hit you up. If they stay after that trim work is done the traps might be needed.

Sounds good. BigHoss works in the CBD, he tried to convince a homeless guy to gather live birds for us for a fixed rate. The homeless guy said "na"

True fact, Europeans brought Pigeons over here because they were a tasty staple of their diet. Pigeons are delicious if you can get past everyone's preconceived notion that they're rats with wings. They are in the same family as doves, actually were called Rock Doves, and they're a bit larger than our native doves. My advice, get rid of them by getting fat if you can. I've had them in France and it was a damn fine meal...

I'm all for eating them. But there's a sequence: grow, shoot, eat....repeat. So, hoping someone on here knows someone who has some experience in breeding them.
