quote:I see that you went to Sandy Hollow. Is there much deer hunting going on there? It's only 20 minutes from the house and I've never been out there. I know it's primarily used for upland hunting, but I've always been curious how the deer hunting is there.

I have jumped a few deer here and there but very few and I have been on the property quite a bit with the dogs. They don't run deer but will jump them if they hold tight in cover while we pass. The pics you see are typical cover out there lots of knee high grass with scattered pines and thick trees in the bottoms.
About 3 miles west of the WMA on 10 there was a large (body) 6 point standing on the side of the road at 8:00 this morning. The car in front of me and the car going the opposite way stopped and the deer had an oh shite moment. Crossed the road slipping on the asphalt and crossed a cow pasture with the after burners on...

Not offhand, we have been down here 12 years but only really know some of the people with kids my son's age. I have no idea what most of their last names are...

Gotcha. I married a Salassi girl from FS. Wasn't sure if you knew the in laws or not. My FIL seems to know everyone down that way

Looks like a nice day for Jr to skip school.
Got a question. My labkin is hunting like an upland bird dog. He sweeps the yard back and forth for anything and if he sees a butterfly or bird, he locks up and lifts his right front paw as if he is pointing. I never messed with an upland bird dog. He will do that the better part of the day.
So, should I get him into woodcock hunting?

Yep, I am surprised he isn't finding a couple on your walks. He is probably sight pointing more than anything right now, when he bumps a bird or two he will start using his noise to point...

Kill a woodcock, tie the wing to a string and drag it around on the ground. If he smells it and points, praise him. If he jumps it, beat his arse.

Pointing dogs have 90% of their hunting built it, he just needs birds to learn, not an arse beating...

Problem is that the woodcock haven't showed up yet. My woods are bone dry right now. Once I get a little water in the woods and very cold weather, they get thick.
I been working him to retrieve. Also, just watching him watch a bird is funny. He will lock up when he sees one.

AWESOME PICS. That Second one looks like a masterpiece painting. I could see that one framed in 24 x 36 and hanging in some lawyers office.
Was thinking the same thing

The one I found today was in a bone dry area, give him time he will find birds, they will come...

I was just trying to accelerate the process.
Seriously though, if you are patient with them, they learn it just like with anything else. Teaching them to back up another point was always the hardest thing I dealt with. If you get a hard-headed pointer, they can frustrate you. I enjoyed training beagles to rabbit hunt a lot more, but there's nothing better than busting a covey over a good pointer.
