I've paddled a lot of the Mississippi (in a kayak) and it is a beautiful river. Haven't been as far north as Memphis,but have done the 50 mile stretch into Vicksburg.
Looking for something non paddling as I've probably paddled 3,000 miles in the last 5-6 years.
Thanks for the suggestion though as it may open someone else's eyes to the idea.

Ya, might not be as difficult as some of the other stuff, but from all the reports everyone has had a blast. There are reviews on their website.
I always wanted to take like a week or two vacation ans go there, shoot the match, then hang around the mountains.
I think it is at a different venue this year, but should be just as good.

I was interested in something called Lead-something years ago. High alltitude marathon, seemed interesting.

I will look into this. I have rafted the Upper Gauley river in West Virginia during a record release period. The absolute closest I've ever come to dieing. I was forced under water in the class 5 Pillow rock rapids. Luckily I came up just as I was out of air. All caught on camera because that is where their photographer sets up. Seconds later our entire 8 man raft flipped completely over. I'll find pictures to post. A woman died in that same spot the next day. They had to stop the water flow and lower the river to retrieve her body. She was pinned under a rock outcrop 15 feet below the water line.
I'll post a few pictures if I can find them. Was a bad situation. I was in back right corner and already underwater in he first picture. Hadn't expected to be go underwater so I was immediately out of breath.

It's really more endurance than dangerous. Some class III, but mostly float. Goes through the coastal range of BC and Alaska, and you'll see lots of bears, maybe some moose and lots of glaciers. NatGeo ranked it the number one whitewater trip in the world. It takes about a week to 10 days if you do it right. You'll end up in the Gulf of Alaska

Yeah it is. I've done it twice, but years ago. It's 100% wilderness.

What is the best time of year to go?
How many people to a raft? Rounding up friends is always the tough part for these things.
Can you rent the raft from an outfitter in the area and they retrieve it at the end? If not, how do you get it back to them?

For sure. Tough enough to get people together for a weekend trip. Anyone know of anything like this in the lower 48? Obviously won't be nearly as grand but in terms to remoteness.

Depends on the raft. I've seen people do it in one person packrafts, with friends doing the same. Solo is a bad idea here
Yep. Outfitters in Haines AK and Haines Junction YT. They can retrieve it at the end for a fee. They also will supply a guided trip if you want that option
Definitely, though my next long adventure will be Aniakchak. Look into that one too. It's a advanced course for amateur adventure. Takes 14-21 days and only 100 ppl or so a year do it. Hike into an active volcanic caldera and raft 30 miles to sea

Congrats on living a life of intention, adventure, and commitment. It has probably inspired your kids in ways they (and you) won't fully appreciate for another decade.
