Just had a friend try to tell me he heated his entire house last winter with stupid pellets for around a grand and I spent half that to heat my entire home,(which is twice the size of his), with wood. Then he says,"its just a much better heat...", whatever that means.

Why in the world would someone buy a stupid pellet stove over a wood stove is beyond me.

We need to make a list of all OBers who use pellet stoves and send them adrift.

Pellet stoves are extremely efficient, much more so than wood burning.

In.

Love them. I have used them for around 18 years and they are cleaner, more consistent and can be used more (for me) than wood stoves.

We have temp. inversions in winter at times when there are bans on wood burning. You can still use a pellet stove.

One thing I want in my eventual house/camp is a wood burning stove

lol, wut?

Pellets do not contain any chemicals or other material, making them non-toxic, and because they are small, they have a higher burning efficiency than wood. A pellet stove has a 75 to 90 percent overall efficiency and produces four to five times more BTUs compared to cord wood.

Wood Stoves
Firewood is used by the cord (stacked wood equaling 4 feet high x 8 feet long x 4 feet deep). According to the Department of Agriculture, every cord utilizes 15.3 million BTUs. In heating your home, you benefit from 10.7 million BTUs out of that total, enjoying a stove efficiency level of 70%.

Pellet Stoves
On the other hand, pellets come in 40-lb bags and the stoves have a BTU output of 13.6 million per ton of pellets. From this, you soak up 11.3 million BTUs of heat. The result is greatly improved efficiency over wood stoves, coming in at about 83%.

Pellet stoves come out on top.

Fuel Cost
The cost of wood pellet fuel is usually given in dollars per ton; the average price of the fuel is typically around $250 per ton. The cost of a cord of wood, the fuel burned by a conventional wood stove, is around $200. The average home uses about 7.3 tons of pellet fuel or 6.5 cords of wood per season. A ton of pellet fuel produces about 75% of the energy produced by a cord of wood, but pellet stoves are more efficient than wood stoves, which narrows the fuel-cost gap between the two types of stove. You should also note that most pellet stoves have fans, controls and fuel-feeder systems that run on electricity; the monthly electric bill for a typical stove is about $9.

good job on finding a website supported by the pellet stove lobby

only way i would ever buy a pellet stove is if i was in a situation like you or where i couldn't burn or lived in a city where storage space may be a issue

no way i am ever leaving wood

is your pellet stove one of those that is controlled by a computer?

Nah. I'm too thrifty for that high tech stuff. I just set the auto feed to a certain level and leave it.

They are pretty expensive, relatively but once you start using one, you'll stay with them.

Wood is easy to find and cheap. If it were cleaner, more efficient I'd go back to it. It's probably more expensive in the short term to use a pellet stove but I believe it pays off in the long run.
