The Pascagoula River watershed is the largest river system in the lower 48 without a dam on a major tributary and I finally paddled all of the major streams that flow into it. Somewhere around 800 river miles over a decade of kayaking/canoeing. There are some smaller streams I want to float to add to the mileage.

Some of the best and worst floats were on the Chickasawhay. My favorite float is the Leaf River from Hwy 590 to Eastabutchie. Lots of elevation change (for south MS) with a 3ish foot waterfall and several branches to cool down in. Like the Okatoma without the cops or crowds.

Not on new floats for me. Fished Black Creek some. I try to paddle 20 miles a float, doesn't leave a lot of time for anything else.

good friend of mine lived off Graveline Rd. near Shepard Park (Gautier, MS) as I did a lot of wake board/skiing in the West PR and PR during the early/mid 80's. I remember several large trees along the river had ropes so you could swing out into the river. Even won $100 one Summer for catching the largest speckled trout, just south of Hickory Hill Country Club. Great memories from that area. Winter months I would go deer & coon hunting with dogs near Vancleave

800 miles means you’ve seen something slightly unique or crazy in that watershed.

Whether it was people, gators, bears etc. we’d like to hear your top two occurrences.

I've only spent a couple of nights on the Leaf. Next goal is to float the entire Leaf/Pascagoula in one trip. Or maybe the Chickasawhay/Pascagoula. I have a rig to use my hammock on sandbars because at least one sandbar I camped on was terrible with sand fleas or whatever they are called. Anything within 6" of the sand was getting tore up. Deet was no help.

I may have seen a couple of bear cubs on the Leaf between Taylorsville and Reddock's Ferry. They didn't look or move like pigs but they were gone before I could register what I was seeing. I saw lots of gators, the biggest I saw was on the smallest stream I floated. On Gaines Creek just below Hintonville and saw a gator slowly sliding into the creek with me that was as wide as my kayak. I don't know how long because I only saw the back half of it. My favorite was late summer when everything was shallow and clear I would see a lot of sturgeon swimming on sand flats.
