300 Yama 2 stroke. 100 hours. No issues during the 8-9 years I have had it. Service it every year and is very clean. Last week while pulling the kids in the tube I experienced a sudden power loss at the point of highest resistance from the tube (just as the slack tightens and you yank the tube in a different direction). As soon as the max resistance yielded , rpm and power went back to norm. Did this several times over the next 30 minutes. I stopped pulling the tube. Drove it around just to test it. When I hit rough water (big wake or wave) it would have the same sudden power loss as it pushed up the wake/wave. Any thoughts? It ran like a scalded ape otherwise.

It's an HPDI. Will change the plugs and see if it's a cure. Where are the secret filter screens that you speak of?

When power was needed the most you also needed the best spark, the most fuel, and the greatest amount of air to combust it.....spark plugs would be my first swap out....just because its an easy fix and depending on how old may need it anyway....second would be checking or changing every fuel or fuel water seperator filter you have on it...if it has screens clean them and back wash with gas to make sure. then I would check every fuel line and connection...you said its a few years old....Fuel these days sucks and causes cracking and leaks in hoses and connections. the very smallest of a pin hole can cause major issues when you are at high rpms. it may not be very noticeable at all but any air in that system causes displacement of fuel needed for power. Good luck

Good post. The HPDI's have had some issues with the filter screens. If you google you'll find what I'm talking about. All of the above are likely causes for that issue. Seen it happen a bunch with a bunch of different motors.

it could be a coil or other wire grounding/ shorting out. THats pretty hard to check. We once found the issue by running the motor at night without the cover on and found a spark jumping ot the block from the coil.

Plugs, fuel filters first and prey that fixes it. If not probably something electrical.

Holy crap 8-9 years old and 100 hrs on the motor! That thing isn't even broken in yet. I bet it's something from sitting up plugs filters etc..
