Going to be my first attempt at turkeys Sunday & Monday. Not sure what to expect other than a lot of walking and learning. Hoping I get lucky.

I'll be out there. I'm obsessed enough to hunt in the rain.

Unfortunately they closed all the public turkey hunting grounds due to the flooding

Just giving everyone a heads up before they get excited.

I'm going, if it wasn't in LA, I'd be in MS or AL.

Hopefully the rain will stop early Saturday. The wind will be high, but they should do some gobbling when it breaks.

Good luck all!

I hunt in North MS and West AL, but I'm right there with you. It's only 6 weeks long, so I go rain or shine on the weekends. On nice week days, I can go and leave if I don't get one off the roost and be in the office by 9:30

I wont be going this weekend because I got drill and don't have a place leased or permission to hunt birds here in Louisiana. I am leaving Sunday after drill and running up to hunt Oklahoma on Monday. Place I am going is loaded down with birds. Then next weekend I am going with a buddy in Louisiana to place I have been twice and killed birds both times so feeling pretty good about that.

Where you headed? Black Kettle?

I'm hitting the woods tomorrow morning for the opener here. Supposed to be wet, but Saturday is COLD (low 20s and potentially snowing) with wind, and Sunday is super windy so I think tomorrow is my best bet.

Heading to a buddy's place south of Tulsa. I made a hunt in Texas opening weekend and killed 3, should have been 4 but a yote ruined it. I did kill a freaking stud of a rio though. Had 1.5in spurs, 9.5in beard, and weighed 23lbs. Rios just don't gobble like a damn eastern. I grew up hunting Georgia and with me starting a new job time off has been hard to come by. I am taking off the first week of may and gone hunt family land in Georgia which is about 2k acres. I can normally kill my three birds in 2-3 days and not hunt super hard. I usually go the 2nd weekend in april though so I hope some are still looking for love by then.

Right now it looks like Black Kettle, but I'm not 100% yet. I'm waiting for my schedule to calm down so I can start doing some more in-depth research. I've never hunted rios so I'm pretty excited.

If you can kill easterns, you can kill rios no problem. The two birds I killed with one shot the 2nd day of season in Texas came from a LONG ways off. When I first heard them I wasn't sure it was a gobble. Then before I knew it that had cut the distance in half but was on opposite side of river. I made a big loop got the their side of river, threw out avian-x half strut jake over laydown hen and a breeder hen and made one call. They gobbled at about 100 yds and within seconds I saw them running to the decoys. They didn't get to beat up on my jake too bad before they had a face full of lead. Every Rio I have killed has responded a lot better to calling and gobbles a lot more than easterns usually.

I don't live in Georgia anymore. My family does. Its in Candler and Tattnall counties. My mom and stepdad have 300 acres then we lease 900 right down the road and my grandparents own about 1200 but only about 600-800 of it has birds on it. The rest is fields with no woods around.

I'll be hunting just south of the Black Kettle next weekend
