old fishing reels and braid

I have a couple of old Mitchell 300 spinning reels from the '60s that I want to do some fishing with.
As long as I have some mono on the spool first and then add some braid, is there any reason why the reels won't do okay with braid?

If you don't tie the braid where you can't spin it on the spool it will not work.
It took me a while to figure it out but braid will turn on the spool if it is not tied correctly .
I thought the drag was slipping but it was the braid slipping on the spool.

Using mono backing or even covering the spool with electrical tape will take care of this issue.
