225 can be had with a free 620 torch set from Harris if purchased before June 30, or a weld pack that includes a burning jacket, auto dark hood and 50 pound box of rods. That's what I would recommend as well
Eta: that's the Lincoln ranger 225,
Sounds like a good deal.

Little Lincoln mig welder. We have one and a big stick machine and use the Lincoln more

You can get a regular 225 stick machine for ~$350

It really is. Good thing about it is you can mig, Tig, stick, gouge, or flux core with it. So if the kids take up welding they can do it all on one machine. It's engine driven (23 HP gasoline) and single phase AC generator.

Yes, I have access to 240v.
My barn is a huge metal structure with beams at least 3/8" thick. the fencing inside the barn is 3" heavy metal pipe. I def don't want anything too light, because there's always a chance a project will come up that is bigger than I'm thinking about right now.
So, first off, what's the type I should be looking at? stick, mig, etc?
For this kind of application I would go Arc. It sounds like you are going to be making lots of dirty welds on heavy steel. Arc is harder to start, but more forgiving for this kind of application.
Get a HF auto dark helmet and rock and roll.

I'd probably say MIG, with stick second
Go with a 180-220 amp Mig from Hobart, Miller, or Lincoln. Hobart(made by Miller) is probably the best option financialy, if you are just using occasionaly.
The 110v/220v options are nice as well, but add some dough to the price. realy good option if you have to be mobile or take it to other peoples homes.
or you could just go with the old lincoln tombstone stick welder

Also, don't get a cheap hood. These are your eyes we're talking. Fork out some money for an auto dark with at 2 or 3 sensors or you won't be able to see in 10 years. If you're paying less than 150 for an auto dark then you're getting a crappy lens. Chicago Electric (harbor freight) hoods are shite. Miller and 3M are top of the line but Lincoln, arc one, Radnor are all better than Chicago electric

I don't think an auto-dark is a must have. A regular pipeline hood with good knobs and latches is plenty enough IMO.
I also prefer stick to mig. Learn how to run a stick and mig seems like a glue gun.

Thanks for all the info, men. I should narrow it down some by saying, for now I want to spend less than $500 if possible, and then if we get serious, maybe step up to a nice one later. Lots of different answers on what type I should look at. I think I'm more confused than before.
Posted on 4/29/13 at 4:28 pm to olgoi khorkhoi
For less than $500 you're better off with a small stick rig IMO. You can get a good one for under $500 and a good mig is going to be more.
Eta: if you've never done it, be ready for anger and frustration
It takes some getting used to.

The HF hood has UV/IR up to 16(DIN) at all times it is fine for just about anyone who posts here looking for a home machine. There is no need to buy a $400 hood for a home application.

it's cool, I live in a constant state of anger and frustration

Good because you'll be sticking rods and burning through shite regularly.

One of the hardest things I have done was welding 14ga to .25" upside down.
Biggest frustration is welding two different size metals and having to spend 20 minutes fixing the damn hole I made.
OP, you can get one of those Lincoln stick machines at damn near any Home Depot. I haven't been to one that didn't have one sitting on the shelves
