OB Mechanics-2500 Gas Burner question

I've never asked a mechanic question here but I do read them and I'm convinced the OB mechanics are better then the OT. So
One of my trucks is a 2011 GMC 2500 gas 120k miles and the check engine light came on. It gets regular oil changes, all fluids are fine, voltage etc...all looks good. Not running any different than the day I bought it.
What would make this come on? Is it maybe a mileage reason?

lol.
Go to Autozone and get the code checked. I am not about to start listing the 1000 reasons a truck throws a code.

Well they reset it a month ago and it came back on a week later. I'm not really too worried just curious. I don't drive it much.

Probably a stupid evap code. Too many unnecessary sensors nowadays.

Get them to run it again, but write it down this time.
Pillage is probably right, something small with a sensor. If it runs right and doesnt smoke, I wouldnt worry.

Good enough.
Think I'll have an ice cream sammich and watch this second half.
Thanks.

*Typically* when a CEL comes on it is emission related and could be a number of things that don't affect the running or performance of the truck.

A GM doesn't run correct without that light on. It's a great conversation piece for a new passenger also.

You have to work the code.
If it is cleared and comes back then something needs to change.
Sometimes it is a sensor, COP, plug, vacuum leak, o2 sensor, gasket, etc.
It can be any one of a hundred different things.
If you don't know how to diagnose OBD faults then take it to a mechanic with the light on so he can check it out.

My gas 6.0 was a couple years older but with the 160,000 plus miles I had on it the only time my check engine light came on it was the
Mass Air Flow Sensor.
Swing by an auto parts store and they can scan it and see what the code is.

LINK
+
Torque pro app
Both less than $30 and you'll be able to do your own code reads and clear codes and also view performance and view real time sensor data.
Only bad thing is your friends will always want you to come over and "turn off their light"

I have been having one for a few years. Every one should own one.

It actually depends on what code is being thrown. I believe you're referring to "limp mode." My oil pressure sensor is bad right now and throwing a code but it hasn't affected engine function. It just reads as a 0 on the gauge.
But the down side to throwing an engine code on a GM is that the remote start function won't work until the check engine light is gone.
Thanks for the link MeauxJeaux!
