And thinking about hopping the engine up some.

Learn me what I want to do to it. Cam?

It's an EFI 5.8.

Man I've always wanted one but never found the right deal. I think I'd like a 78-79.

No clue about that motor, I had 351 Windsors in both my Broncos. One was a 72 and the other an 82 full size.

That would be a 351W too.

Now, as far as rebuilding, it's basically a taller deck 302 with nearly the same level of aftermarket support (which is tons). What kind of rebuild are you looking to do? Just freshening it up or something with a bit more performance. If the latter I'd suggest doing a little research on the First Generation F-150 Lightnings, they ran EFI 5.8's with GT40 heads/lower intake, slightly hotter cam, and intake setup.

I flat out stole this one. Found it on Facebook and got it for $250, they thought the engine was locked up. The wire coming from the solenoid to the starter was broken causing it to just "click" when you tried to start it. The lady I bought it from, her son ran it hot and it smokes just a tad on the right side so I'm gonna just tear it down and do a rebuild since I have so little in it.

Body is very straight with no rust and it's 4x4 too. They guy they got it from had it switched from a 5-speed to an auto. I'm gonna change it back to a manual tranny while I have the engine out. It's also the Eddie Bauer edition.

I also have a 1979 F-250 Camper Special that I'm piddling around with. I've already changed it back to the original 4 speed tranny (why people change them to automatic is beyond me). It's a really long term project.

Yes, I would like a little more performance with it but nothing gaudy or extravagant. I know I want to do a slightly hotter cam/lifter setup and had never thought about changing the intake.

Thanks for any suggestions.

it depends how wild you want to go. You can stroke it to almost a 400 cubic inch engine if you want. But what the others recommended such as a different cam, intake, exhaust manifolds/headders will give it a little more pop.

I don't wanna get too wild. How will headers affect all this emissions BS they put on them? It already had a good pair on Magnaflows on it.

What state are you in? Neither of my trucks have emissions equipment. You can get simple O2 sensor deletes since your truck is EEC-IV, not even need a tune. If you built your engine with Gen 1 Lighning parts you see about 250hp/350tq conservatively. Opt in an aftermarket cam, headers, and a tune and you'll be closer to 270/380. Also, 1997+ 5.0 Explorers/Moutaineers had iron GT40P heads which are a very cheap source for practically the same GT40 iron heads of the Gen 1 Lightnings (GT40P's have a slightly smaller CC and different ports for smog crap). GT40X aluminum versions are less than $700 a pair new too. You can easily get 300hp out of that engine with inexpensive OEM parts and no compromise for driveability or mpg's.

you want drivability with that vehicle. Get the motor redone with a Ford B303 cam, Trickflow heads and Trickflow intake and a custom tune to make them all come together nicely.

Yes, I want drivability. Not as an every dayer but a trip to the beach once in a while.

Good tips guys, keep them coming.

E 303 grind cams are an upgrade and are considered emissions grade cams. The B303 is a step up and gives a nice lope to the motor. Throw on some Trickflow heads, intake, roller rockers,MSD Ignition and distributor and get a tune and you'll be happy with the results.

That intake looks a good bit different than the one that's on there now? Will it affect the throttle body and all the electronic idler BS they put on them?

not at all. I ran this setup on a 95 Mustang GT for a long time. It was great.

Mounted to a 351 Windsor in a Mustang.

only difference is he has an E303 cam. Still sounds good though

Sounds sweet. My intake goes to the driver's side though.

Buy an edelbrock head/intake/cam kit. Cuts out the math and gives you the best bang for your buck

Add some long tubes

Just curious, what's different about these aftermarket heads vs stock?

if you don't want to switch sides for the intake Eldebrock makes this.
