After Ida, I purchased a 3500 Predator Generator as a backup. I ultimately ended up not needing to use it; but I am going to keep it. It is still in the box as it came from the store.

Do the experts of the OB recommend storing it as is with no fluids? That’s what I was leaning towards, just looking for other opinions.

I’d think the engine needs to be “pickled”, so that condensation doesn’t create problems w/bearings & piston rings…

like maybe it doesnt even run, or if it does its not putting out any power, but you wont find this out until its been in storage for a long time?

you better run it now to be sure it works and dont have to return it while you still can. then drain the tank and the carb bowl of all gas and let the gas tank fully dry out. make sure it has oil in it so the bearings dont get rusty and store it as long as you want.

its also a great idea to buy a spare carb for them since they only cost around $15 and you dont want to have to try fixing it when you need it to run

FWIW I bought a generator in 2012 and didnt start it until 2021. I did put oil in it when I first got it and changed it before starting it the first time. Not sure if this is recommended but it ran great

Even though it's probably not ideal, I do that all the time.

I have a generator sitting new in the box in my shop. I had a $1000 Hobart welder in a box for 2 years. I like to buy shite and let it marinate. I don't give a shite because I don't ever sell anything. I use it until it can't be rebuilt anymore then trash it and have a standby ready to go.

My dad's the same way. I probably have 5 pairs of overalls never worn for years. I can't wear them until my others are trash.

I have a spare never fired.

In my shop and not climate controlled all the time.

I put rotella T6 and turned it over several times to let oil get into the motor and coat the internals.

Drained it out.

Put it back up. A coat of oil should protect the interworkings from any moisture or condensation.

I just remembered the 120/240 volt plasma cutter i bought myself for Christmas, a Hobart 40i for close to 2000 bucks is still in a box and will be until I get totally fed up with my oxy/acetylene rig.

Assemble as required.
Add oil, gas.
Run it. Plug it up and see if it works.
If it works, drain gas (or run dry), change oil (per recommended hours ran) and put away for long term storage.
