Maybe for hunting the lower 48 but not even close for shooting long range. Who the frick wants to be beat up behind a .300 win mag hitting targets?

Weight and barrel length are the biggest issues. The 300wsm is right in there close with the 300 win mag. Looking to go back to a 24inch barrel and lighten up my rifle a bit. I currently have a 300 RUM for a long range rifle but it is a bitch to pack around for any amount of time.

In all honesty, most places I hunt I have nowhere near a 500 yard shot. Actually most shots are inside 200 and my 30.06 is plenty enough to get it done. I'm like most people out there and just like to know I can take a shot at 500 yards if the opportunity presents. I'm liking the 300wsm because it packs some arse along with the velocity to get it there and when it gets there it can do damage. Along with the fact it will be way lighter than my 300 Rum is kinda selling it for me. Never minded a little kick out of my rifle "or after it is sighted in" because when you shoot a deer you never feel it anyway.

I have a whole lot of disagreement to give.

I'm not a long range shooter per say but would like the ability to reach out and touch one at 500+ yards.

Nothing wrong w/ the 6.5 Creedmoor, but it's the ballistic twin to the 260 Remington. If I'm looking at target shooting, the 6.5 Creedmoor would be one of my options. OTOH, if I'm big game hunting (especially to 500 yards) I'm looking for something w/ a little more horsepower. Since you already have a 270 Win, contenders I'd consider:
6.5X284 Norma*
284 Winchester*
7mm Rem Mag
280 Rem/280 Rem Ackley Improved*
30-06/30-06 Ackley Improved*
300 WM
308 Norma Mag*
Weatherby Mags, 270, 7mm and 300.
*Best suited for a handloader.

I have had a 300 win mag for years that sat in the gun closet because it kicks like a mule. I had an accubreak put on it this year and it reduced the recoil to somewhere between a 270 and 243. I wasn't worried about recoil when hunting it was having the ability to sight it in correctly and be comfortable shooting it over and over that I was not able to do prior. The gun is dialed in now and I shot a doe with it sat. evening at 150yds and dropped her in her tracks. Where I hunt now we have the ability to shoot deer at long range up to 1000 yds. I do not feel comfortable yet shooting a deer over 300yds, but know when I do the 300win mag is the correct gun for the job. Go see the guys at Spillway Sportsman they can get the accubreak done for you in about 2 weeks by their gun smith best money I have spent on a rifle in a long time.

I have a 300 WM It's a 9 pound rifle with the scope and I can shoot 2 boxes no problem. I threw in a limbsaver and the kick is not bad at all. I have an old model 70 with a hard pad in a 270 and I much prefer the 300 WM with the limbsaver.

My issues are not with recoil but more so with weight. As I have said earlier I have been shooting a 30.06 for 20 plus years and love it. I really just wanted to try something new. I have a 300 RUM which is a tack driver and can shoot accurately much farther than I am capable. The 300 RUM I own is a Sendero and that bitch is heavy and combersome due to the 26" heavy barrel. I like the ballistics of the 300wsm and was interested in other people's opinions on the 6.5 Creadmore and if they had used it for dear hunting. I have a few places that a 500 yard shot is possible and no that isn't a high percentage shot but I have made it successfully in the past. In the hands of a capable shooter my aught 6 can do that but mine is not set up for that. That's why the 300wsm seems appealing to me because it offers that capability and with less weight and more maneuverability than my 300 RUM.

I also have a .300Rum that is like walking around with a damn fence post on your shoulder. It's a great shooter but big and bulky.

The more likely a rifle is going to be good at 500 yards, the more likely it is going to be big and bulky. Full power RUM loads will probably get you 95% of where you want to be.

I wouldn't want a stalking gun to be the same gun I take 500 yard shots with, personally.

ETA: Based on everything you said in the thread, I would forget taking 500 yard shots with the new gun and fall in love with a .30-30.

I have heard good things about the 6.5. I don't think you could go wrong with either. Look at a 257 WBY As well. It's going to be my next rifle and it's designed for that type of shot, if you are hunting whitetail with it. They have plenty of lighter rifles in both the 300 wsm and 6.5. I haven't shot either so I can say from experience but like I said I don't think you can go wrong with either.

I really like my 257 Wby. Kinda expensive to shoot though.
