Two pieces of information I want while on the lake. #1 is water depth and #2 is GPS measured speed. How cheap can I go and get this info?

I would have just run out and bought this from Academy cause it's in my price range and looks like it does what I want it to do but not in stock in the Auburn Academy. Anything better or cheaper out there? Don't even need a map to be honest this is going on a pontoon that never leaves our small little lake. Speed and depth is all the info I need this ain't a fishing rig.

Just installed a hook 7, wasn't looking for a fish finder, but they were on sale for 400, and my 17 year old Lowrance LCD was acting up, I used it mainly for reading depth. Haven't used yet, but seems like it is fairly simple to operate.

A hook will fit your bill but overall they are a cheap unit and im told that lowrance is already looking at phasing them out. Its like buying an iphone 5 just because its $99 instead of getting the 7
The Ti series is only a few hundred more and better is every category.

I've heard the Hook's have a map lag problem. It's the only complaint I've ever heard about them. Is it really an issuer? Or are people just complaining for the sake of complaining?

Its their processor. Its slow. Id be complaining if i was trying to navigate the marsh at night or low light and it couldnt keep up and all i see is a white screen

Mine doesn't lag. I think it's something with the new firmware that helped. Than being said I wish I would have gotten the TI now. I cannot seem to get the settings for colors correct for the sonar.

Is there any advantage going with a more expensive unit? I really just want GPS indicated speed and depth. One negative about the more expensive units is that are much larger. I was debating just getting a depth sounder but no one around here looks to have one in stock. Wouldn't mind finding one today so I can get the transducer mounted on the pontoon before I set her in the water tonight. Since the toon will live on the covered slip at the lake house it will only come out of the water when it needs to be serviced so doing it today will save me the trouble of pulling it out of the water just to install the transducer. Saw Academy has this one in stock. Don't know much about Garmin's marine electronics but it looks like it will do what I want it to. Might be worth the extra $80 to get the fancy maps on the Hook?

you could probably achieve this with a cheap $50-80 depth gauge and an app on your phone.

Fancy maps on the hook dont come with it. If you want maps you would have to purchase an aftermarket map card.
You can get the Navionics app on your phone and use that for navigation.

The one I purchased a couple weeks ago, from Academy, was a bundle package, which included a maps card.

A buddy of mine has this on his skiff, does a great job. He uses it for the same things you've mentioned.

Is that not the "Insight Pro" map package?

This boat will never leave our lake (Lake Harding on the AL/Ga border) which is pretty small so I don't really see the need for a fancy map other than the image on the screen will look more interesting than just the scanning image. Guess that could be worth $80.

I think the hook only comes with the lowrance base map (a simple water and lean color change differential) not the lake insight pro (that came with my HDS). For what you will want im sure whatever comes on it will be fine. If you were in a marsh type area then it would be useless.
Or i could hook u up with a satellite image map card if you go with lowrance

It does come with insight pro in a bundle,if you are looking for a cheap unit then that's the one. Cause it is cheap. Seemed very slow to button clicks when dealing with the map.
