Bought a big arse Bulleit bourbon 1.75L bottle and finished it and want to make a lamp out of it. I've drilled a hole in the back of it already.
Problem is, the glass is clear and I want to give the glass a stain on the inside to simulate the bourbon. I don't want to fill it with tea for obvious problems. I've tried clear polyurethane with stain but it's too brown instead of amber.
What could I pour inside to coat the interior and give it that clear amber look?
TIA.

There are many different stains
Use a different one and experiment on flat glass pane.
Ide mix walnut and red mahogany .....very small amounts.

The clear high gloss poly seems like a perfect base, but I need something with an amber-brown tint. All the stains I've tried are too brown and make a cloudy effect.
What would food coloring do in the poly?
What about an oil based dye?

Fill it with cheap whiskey. When you are tired of the lamp, you have two options.

They have an amber stain at the above link, but you might need to mix a couple stains together to reach the desired color.

Can you dilute the stain you used with a clear solvent to get the right color?

I don't have anything to add as far as how to accomplish this...but I'd like to see the lamp when you're done

Nailed it. Orange and a couple drops of brown translucent oil based dye mixed with oil based polyurethane.
Took a couple of tries, but I figured it out. Have to use translucent dye instead of paint.
I'll post a pick when done.
Thanks for the help everyone.

Try to do it with making a line at the top where it'd be filed at

I was thinking the same thing.

I'm thinking put the cap on, turn upside down, insert a long straw through the hole in the bottom and fill with mineral spirits just past the neck. Let it sit for a while, and unscrew the cap. Perfect line.
That or a Q-tip with mineral spirits.
