Need a ruling on a S&W AR-15.

Choice of two: The S&W AR-15 at academy.
$746 for the Sporter and $959 for the optics ready. Sporter does not have forward bolt assist or dust cover. They both have 1/9 twist rates. Optics ready is aluminum receiver.
Is it worth the $200+ difference between the two?

The sport model is one of the best values out there.
My buddy has run his Sport model in 2 carbine classes, shooting near 2000 rounds. 100% reliability on both trips, plus the second trip was all steel-cased ammo. The forward assist and dust cover aren't that necessary although I personally like having them.
It is an outstanding rifle. It's up to you if you want to spend the extra cash but it definitely isn't necessary.

Since it's almost a given you will probably want to run an optic at some point in the future anyway, I'd go with the OR model. For the $200 price difference you could certainly get a low-end reflex or low-power scope but you'll want to remove the A2 gas block for a low-profile version which, for the quality ones, will make the difference in price a non-issue when all is said and done. Lots of options for iron sights anyway. Get the OR, get an Aimpoint or EOTech on it, have fun then figure out BUIS later.

Forward assist and dust cover along with optic ready is the way I'd go. Iron sights are more than good enough.

I've got the regular one, not the sporter, with less than 10 rounds through it, paid $1100 for it, will sell for 1 k, if interested? I'll see if I have a pic.

dang i thought they were cheaper. Here in columbia (ms) my dad bought himself one, and 2 of his employees bought one each 2 weeks ago for $500

I have the OR and love it. Zero issue with any ammo so far.

i love my basic model. hitting a paper plate consistently at 85 yds with open sights. that's the farthest distance I have shot it. i probably won't ever put a scope on it.

There are cheaper models. The smith has a good rep though

I've got the one you have Geauxt and I think it's a great gun. Read some very impressive testing done on the gun.

Anybody have any experience with the new Ruger AR 556? It's the same price as the S&W sport but it has the dust cover and forward assist, might give it a go to backup my Colt 6920.

Does that include scope? Had to ask ;-)

Great gun but you should be able to find the optics ready for $700-800

I think there is a slight run on AR's so go with M855. Lot of parts dried up quick.

yeah i might wait
paid $450 for a DPMS oracle at cabelas this past summer. i'm not saying the M&P isnt a nicer rifle because it is, but its not any better at least for the casual shooter. forward assist/dust cover/etc dont make the rifle shoot any better, and i know no one who has ever used either one
