Gents,

As we approach October plans are being made on new sets/ tree stand location. I normally hunt from Lockons and have been using the big clumsy 20' ladders that are strapped to the tree for the past five years.

In the past I have used everything from ameristep treesteps to the old school folding screw in steps. My question is why not use 10 in tree spikes? If anyone has experience with them (guage/make) let me know and a good place to acquire. It seems the local Ace may just be the place

Thanks for the help guys

Why not just use climbing spurs? They aren't safe, but they are safer and quieter than nailing big nails in a tree 15' off the ground.

I never enjoyed putting in those tree spikes. It can be tough to get them in on hardwoods. Also, if you don't take them out in a year or two, the tree grows around them and you will never get them out.

I know it would be expensive but why not just use climbing sticks? Then you don’t have to worry about unwanted visitors when you aren’t in your stand.

My old man used nails when I was a boy but I don’t recall them being 10”. Maybe had enough sticking out of the tree to get 3 toes on.

I have a set of lone wolfs set up with cheaters I am looking for a semi permanent option.

I did think about hanging the lock ons and then using sticks on every hunt. They tend to be clunky/cumbersome and I end up being a sweaty mess once Im situated

With the existence of climbing sticks why in the world would you use screw in steps? I could be 20’ up a tree by the time you screw or hammer in one step

Because I will be prepping 5-10 trees prior to hunting season with steps that stay in the tree. Thats the concept

Back a long time ago, we used cotton picker spindles. They worked, but they were unfortunately permanent, couldn’t get em’ out.
I still prefer climbers to loc ons, imo, more safety and comfort, but more sweat in early bow season.

Used to use them when I was young,, supposedly landowners don’t want them used due to left over nails damaging saw blades when milled or cut

If you're prepping 5-10 trees, why not just use ladder stands? Much safer and much more comfortable.

If you use this method all you have to carry is a pocketfull of bolts to climb any tree you have pre-drilled.
