My riding mower backfires

when I turn it off. It is about three years old and only has about 28 hours on it. I'm not very mechanical so any help would be appreciated. TIA

Pour some Seafoam in the gasoline as well.

dirty air filter will cause the motor to pull in more gas than it needs.Also pull out oil dipstick and smell to make sure raw fuel isn't getting into the crankcase.

Also make sure you pull your throttle all the way back to idle before you switch it off.
