Most Reliable 9.9hp Outboard?

Looking for a 9.9hp two stroke to convert to a 15hp via carb kit. Everything I've read points me towards a mid 1980's Jonny/Rude but I'm open to suggestions if it'll save me a headache

My dad has a late 80's johnson 9.9 that's been carbed up to a 15. The carbs tend to get gunked up, and it's a bitch to cold start, but otherwise it's a tank. The funny thing about this span of motors is they didn't have a tell-tale. You have no idea if the water pump is pumping or not. It's either a miracle or a testament to the motor that it's made it this long, as 95% of it's run time has been on sandy shallow rivers.

Sea king or sea horse

This one is a seahorse. Fun little motor to tinker with.

I have a 1973 seahorse that ran like a top until just a few years ago. I put it up in the barn and I have no doubt that it would still start right up with fresh gas and a carb cleaning.
