I know of a plantation the dates back to be used as a spanish fort. You have my permission to go there. The owner of the property may not be so agreeable though.

Hijack. I found an old water well in the woods on my lease. Where would be a good area to metal detect, close around it?

I'm with you man. It's tough to find decent places to hunt now. I think a lot of people have the impression that we dig giant holes in their yards. I have gotten precise enough to dig a small plug everytime I locate something. Can't even tell I dug a hole most of the time.

All around it. If there was an old house or camp around I'd search the whole area.

Work in a grid pattern and keep track of what you searched. And dog every signal, even if you think it's trash in the ground. Dig it up and put it aside

Wouldn't be a bad idea around it. You need to look for a old home foundation spot. Shouldn't be far from the well obviously. I would think the well would've been behind the house.

You need to find the old trash spot. Look for a ravine. Those were where people used to throw old bottles and other discarded items. Could find anything there.

Yep. Their dogs do more damage than we do, and we fill our holes back up.

I hope this works out for you. I find metal detecting so fascinating. Especially when it comes to old war artifacts. It's almost put you back in that place and time. This and civil war reenacting are two things I could really get into.

I used to know a guy that lived on long island and he would go to crop fields in New Jersey when they would plow them up. He found all sorts of things. Civil war buttons, bullets, etc. I'd love to do it, but I have too many hobbies as it is.

Go drive around downtown Baton Rouge and look for construction sites where they are tearing up the dirt. Go to the spot as early as you can on a weekend day, preferably Sunday and have fun. If the construction crew shows up, ask if it's okay to detect in an area where they aren't working. I've been kicked out of sites by police and state archeologists but never got in any real trouble. You'll be surprised at the number of other folks down there doing the same thing. Talk to them and see if they can put you on some sites.

The land between the sidewalk and the street is not privately owned so you can try there too. The closer to the old Pentagon Barracks, the better. Once, they were replacing the parking lot of the barracks so they tore up the old asphalt. It was a goldmine of buttons, bullets, and a couple of buckles.

Like someone else said, go try a cane field right after it gets harvested and cleared. There was Civil War action in those fields on the bayou between Donaldsonville and Labadieville. Lots of old stuff out there if you can find someone willing to let you search. There used to be a very active MD club in BR and they would arrange hunts so someone with connections would get permission and the club would show up and hunt. Try Googling a club.
