Mauser Questions

Visiting my grandparents this weekend and my granddad gives me two guns, one of which is a 1916 model Mauser short rifle. From what I've gathered it is Spanish made (1931) and chambered in 7mm Mauser. The thing is absolutely pristine. I don't think it's been fired at all (I'll post pics later). I just had a couple questions.
The action is buttery smooth and everything looks great but I assume I should still take it to a gunsmith before I attempt to fire it? Also, for anyone with experience with 7mm Mauser ammo, how hard is it to find?

Not familiar with Spanish 7mm Mausers but if it has the rear locking lug that most Mauser patterned rifles of that era have then it should be fine to shoot if it cycles and locks properly. I have a Yugo 8mm Mauser and it had no problems with the Turkish surplus and contemporary ammo. I'd scrub the bore and shine a light to see its condition. Corrosive ammo was the norm back then. Not a huge issue if it is a little dark, just will need to run some bore paste.

Also, look (smell) for cosmoline. It could have been treated before being stored and you'll have to clean it out. I had to clean up a Mosin and I found that if you strip it down, take all the wood off, heat it up (probably the hot summer sun would be enough, like put in the bed of your pickup for a couple hours) and I just used a lot of Hoppes, but some folks use brake fluid or some such, and it should clean up. And you'll have to strip down the bolt as well, and probably the trigger/sear assembly. That stuff is sticky and goes EVERY where.
While cosmoline is a stinky pain the arse, the good news is that it protects the metal parts beautifully and if yours has it, it's probably in great shape - possibly even unfired. Check your serial numbers, if they all match and the gun is coated with cosmoline, it probably hasn't been fired.
You're on your own for ammo, I don't recall seeing any around recently - but then I'm not looking for it.

I have several old military Mausers. Do what The previous posters said. Ammo is plentiful but corrosive. I always fire the first shot in an old rifle with it under the range table and zip tied to a tire. Once it fires and is still whole, I then fire away.
