Louisiana Boat Trailer Registration

I had a thread a while back about purchasing jet skis from my father in law who lives in Texas. Everything went great except for one aspect, the trailer. FIL went through a move and never could find the paperwork for the trailer. He went to the DMV who told him there was no title for the trailer and acted like nothing was needed but a seperate bill of sale to transfer ownership. Anyone have any idea if this is bullshite? Seems like I would need something showing he was legally the owner.

I do not think boat trailers are titled in Texas.
Maybe BleedingPurple or another Texas OBer will chime in with some knowledge.
You might call or stop by one of those title businesses and surely they can help you get everything straight.

We used one of my buddies for all the paperwork and only cost me some beer out of my fridge. He advised to handle the trailer asap as a wreck could lock us both in on the legal side. FIL does have a printout from Honda stating the trailer is paid off with the vin# on it, but nothing state wise.

If you live in LA, you should be able to go to a state trooper location and they can title the trailer, as long as you have a bill of sale.

I have a title for my boat trailer. Im not sure how you get a registration for it without one. I could be wrong here tho.
Like I said in the other thread, dont listen to the DMV they will send you in circles. Go to a privately owner Title Company and ask them what you will need to do.

If the trailer has never been titled, you don't need a title to register it.
If it has ever been titled in another state, you will need a copy of the title.

see I had the opposite experience in trying to get vehicle titled (all I had was bill of sale). Title companies were telling me all kinds of horseshite...I drove it to LSP on independence (on a trailer), got the VIN verified, went over to the dmv finance office next door, filled out the app, paid my tax and in 4 days I had title in hand

Okay… So I just went through this with the boat I bought.
You will need your father-in-law to go get the registration certificate for the trailer. If he doesn't have the registration certificate he needs to go back to the place where he bought it from and get a bill of sale from them. Once you have the registration you need to get a bill of sale from your father-in-law to you with all the proper registration and VIN number information. Get the bill of sale notarized in both Texas for your father-in-law signature and Louisiana for your signature and then bring to the DMV for registration. Make sure to put the trailer was not sold to you otherwise you will need to pay taxes on the sale amount.
It doesn't matter how old/expired the registration is in Texas… The registration itself acts as a title for a trailer less than 4000 pounds

once when I was young, I bought a boat to keep at a camp and just let the trailer title slide because I never used it...
twenty years later, when I wanted to sell the whole shite, it turned out to be a massive pain in my arse...never again...

In Alabama, single purpose trailers aren't titled and don't even require a tag. For instance, if it is a boat trailer, the boat registration is all that is required.
