Would it handle a 40 hp? Is it rated for it?

I ask because I would not go out of my way for 5 extra hp of a 30 if I have a 25. I would for a 40 hp though.

A 25 on 15 ft boat will make it move, but loaded down can be a big difference and a few pounds here or there can prevent you getting up on plane. You eliminate that stepping up to a 40 on that size boat.

i worry with a 40 for too much weight and waves coming over back..getting a new one eiither way. old one has seen its final days and i have pulled that rope too many times

It should say on the stern plate what maximum size motor its rated for.

I am pushing a 1548 G3 with a 4 stroke 25 Yamaha. It does the job but I am in no way breaking any speed records. I will say this, I attached it to a CMC PT-35 and it made a huge difference being able to trim it out of the hole and on pad.
