I have a 10 month old pointer puppy and have him started. Would like someone to work with him on holding point and introducing gun fire. Not looking for a field trial champion, just get him a little more experience in the field than I can provide on a regular basis. I thought I had someone lined up, but he backed out. I called a couple of the game preserves, but no one has returned my messages.

Does anyone know of a good trainer in Louisiana?

TIA

If you have facebook, check out the Louisiana Upland Dogs page. I know there is a guy up around Alexandria that trains upland dogs, but I don't know his name

Just take him hunting. I had my GSP retriever trained, which he hated, but got through. I've taken him quail hunting several times, and he holds a point with no formal training. It's just in their blood.

I agree with this, wild birds will train a dog very quickly

Thanks guys! I tend to agree. He's very instinctive. The only thing I'm fighting is his tendency to tear through a field at full speed. Have trouble slowing him down. Was a little worried about the gunshot intro as well. I just don't have a great way to do that right now as I don't have a good place to shoot around him right now.

For all of my dogs, I had my wife or sister hold the dog while we shot skeet and feed the dog treats until he fell asleep. I end up shooting with a sleeping dog on my foot.

Then, introduce the bang with getting bird. Good luck.

You live in Thibodaux? I do as well and do some training with pigeons for my GSP. We could get together sometime

I went mine off twice when he was a puppy for 2 short stints in Alexandria. Main thing was bird contact day in and day out
