I haven't checked the prices in awhile but last time I did if you could find something at 1200 a head you were doing good. I will be jumping in to it down the road but its still a little to high for me right now.

You have the land already? Thats a biggy.

I went to a sale monday and yesterday. The best deals were actually cow/calf pairs. Pairs were going for the same as a heavy bred cows were ($1100-$1300). If you do not have much experience(many years) I don't reccomend the stockyard. You have about 20 to 30 seconds to check the animal over(feet, eyes, bag, etc.) I buy and sell a bunch and still screw up from time to time. If you jump in now I would definitely buy pairs instead of heavy bred so that my calf crop would peak in september at about 600# and get a return on my investment quicker and I would have dry cows going into the hard winter months. If possible buy directly from the ranch so you have time to look and actually pick out what you want. It may cost a little more but you can see what you are getting without having to make a quick decision. Hope this helps
